Shibpur (2023) Movie Review:
The plot of Shibpur revolves around Mandira (Swastika Mukherjee), who lives with her husband, Aniruddha, an honest government officer, their daughter Tukai, and her in-laws. Two antagonists arrive at Aniruddha's office seeking his signature, but he refuses, despite knowing that they work under Nepal Bhattacharya (Rajatava Dutta), a ganglord in Shibpur. Aniruddha was killed in front of Mandira.
Mandira seeks help from the police and administration but receives no assistance. A police officer attempts to help her but is killed. Desperate for support, Mandira turns to Nepal's rival, Tapan Barik (Kharaj Mukherjee), who agrees to assist her. With Nepal's help, she avenges her husband's death and he offers her a share in his business. Mandira slowly started ruling the locality and soon became a competitor to both Nepal and Tapan.
The Chief Minister (Sujan Mukherjee) grants IPS officer Sultan Ahmed (Parambrata Chatterjee) the authority to quell the violence in Shibpur. Will Sultan Ahmed be able to stand against the trio of Mandira, Nepal, and Tapan and put an end to their activities?
Arindam Bhattacharya impresses with brilliant storytelling, and the makers deserve applause for their efforts in creating an engaging gangster drama, a genre rarely seen in the Bengali film industry. The last notable gangster drama in Bengali cinema was Jeet starrer Chengiz. While Bollywood and South Indian films regularly produce a good number of commercial films each year, this genre has not been explored as extensively in the Bengali film industry. It is high time for producers, directors, and writers to focus more on commercial films in Bengali cinema.
Swastika Mukherjee steals the show with an outstanding performance as Mandira. This is undoubtedly one of the finest portrayals of her career, executed with great conviction. She appears ruthless in the scene where she murders her husband's killer, and her threatening demeanor towards the corrupt police officer demonstrates her ability to bring out the best in a well-written character.
Parambrata Chatterjee delivers a convincing performance as IPS officer Sultan Ahmed. He is the narrator of this film and he skillfully handles Mandira, Nepal, and Tapan in his endeavor to curb the violence in Shibpur, showcasing commendable talent. Mamata Shankar's portrayal of Jele Bedini is powerful and impactful. Last year, her performance in the romantic comedy film Projapoti was well-received by the audience.
Kharaj Mukherjee's role as Tapan Barik is the most surprising casting choice, as it diverges from his previous portrayals. He convincingly plays a ruthless and brutal gang leader, impressing audiences with his versatility in films like Dilkhush, Manobjomin, Belashuru, Habu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Montri, Sweater, Raavan, Rosogolla, Wrong Route, Kishmish, Haami, Boss 2: Back To Rule, Abby Sen, Black, The Royal Bengal Tiger, Le Chakka, Challenge, The Japanese Wife, and more. He will also be featured in Dhrubo Banerjee's upcoming film, Bogla Mama.
Once again, Rajatava Dutta proves that when it comes to negative roles in Bengali cinema, it is hard to match his level of performance. Last year, he impressed audiences with his roles in Karnasubarner Guptodhon, The Bengal Scam: Bima Kando, Bijoya Dashami, and Bhotbhoti. This year, his performance in The Eken Ruddhaswas Rajasthan received acclaim and the film became a massive hit at the box office.
Susmita Chatterjee, as Journalist Paramita, has limited screen time and lacks significant development. One of the issues with Shibpur lies in its poor scriptwriting, which fails to adequately address several areas requiring attention.
For example, Mandira's character transformation is portrayed too abruptly, making it difficult to believe. Additionally, there is insufficient exploration of the reasons behind the rivalry between Nepal and Tapan. Editor Sujay Datta Ray does a decent job in the film, which has been produced by Indo-Americana Production.

Shibpur is an engaging gangster drama with brilliant storytelling by Arindam Bhattacharya and Solid performances by Swastika Mukherjee, Parambrata Chatterjee, Kharaj Mukherjee, Rajatava Dutta, & Mamata Shankar.
