Bengali Movie Kishmish (2022) Review: Story, Performance & Analysis

Tintin(Dev) lives with his parents in Kalighat. He is a not-so-meritorious student and failing in exams is one of his specialties which his father Goblu(Kharaj Mukherjee) doesn’t like at all. Goblu loves football as well as his wife Pubali(Anjana Basu) but sometimes gets frustrated due to Tintin’s lack of focus in his studies.

Tintin was sent to Darjeeling from Kolkata, where he met Rohini(Rukmini Maitra) in the college. Rohini is a smart, intelligent, meritorious, and beautiful girl. Tintin falls in love with her & proposed to her. She rejected the proposal & Tintin was heartbroken.

You might be wondering about the romantic chapter between Tintin and Rohini. Yes, later Rohini returned to Tintin which led to an awesome romantic chapter between them. But how & why did Rohini return to Tintin? No, I won’t do the spoiler here. You have to watch Kishmish to know these answers.

Acting: Yes, I know there is a lead pair who had the maximum screen time in Kishmish but Kharaj Mukherjee steals the show here. He made the character Goblu looked so easy to portray with his natural acting.

He made his debut in Bengali cinema back in 1980 with the movie Hulusthul. That means the versatile actor is in the Bengali film industry for the last 42 years and has delivered some magnificent performances.

His performance in Kishmish will be among his top 10 best performances till date. His dialogue delivery, comic timings & expressions were just perfect. Director Rahool Mukherjee deserves some credit here for getting the best out of him for this character.

After Kharaj Mukherjee, it was Rukmini Maitra who was convincing as Rohini. There is no doubt she is taking her acting to the next level. We have seen her deliver a good performance last year in her Bollywood debut movie Sanak opposite Vidyut Jammwal.

Tintin character was definitely a challenging one to portray & Dev tried his best to give what the character demanded but it was not a convincing one. His performances in Golondaaj, as well as Tonic, were far better and hopefully, we will see something better in Raghu Dakat, Prajapoti, and Kacher Manush.

Anjana Basu, Lily Chakraborty, Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, and June Malia provided good support with their respective characters. The guest appearance by Srabanti Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Paran Bandopadhyay, Rituparna Sengupta, and Ankush Hazra also looked good.

Direction: The movie seems to be a dream debut for director Rahool Mukherjee. His writing and direction are highly impressive.

Other Areas: The animation parts which were shown in the movie were refreshing ones. Modhura Palit’s cinematography & Nilayan Chatterjee’s compositions were amazing.

Final Words:

Kishmish is a Bengali romantic comedy-drama that has various good elements in it. The refreshing story and outstanding performances have made it a must-watch.
