Abar Proloy (2023) Review: Saswata Chatterjee stuns as an action hero

Director Raj Chakraborty brings the gripping action-thriller web series Abar Proloy, comprising 10 episodes, which premiered on 11th August 2023, exclusively on ZEE5.

The storyline of Abar Proloy revolves around Animesh Dutta (portrayed by Saswata Chatterjee), a dedicated police officer from the Special Crime Branch. Tasked with dismantling a sinister human trafficking operation in the Sunderban region, he partners with his subordinates, Karali Babu (Partha Bhowmick) and Madhabi (Sohini Sengupta), who play a crucial role in providing insider information on the criminals.

The series opens with an intense action sequence where Animesh Dutta intervenes during a pursuit led by Bitan Bose (Debasish Mondal), the head of the Titagarh Police Station. This initial encounter showcases Dutta's exceptional combat skills as he confronts the criminals and rescues two young girls.

In his quest to dismantle the human trafficking network, Animesh Dutta crosses paths with local spiritual leader Shombhu Baba (Ritwick Chakraborty), his assistant Mohini Ma (Koushani Mukherjee), and Kanu (Gaurav Chakrabarty).

Additionally, he encounters Binod Bihari (Paran Bandyopadhyay), the individual responsible for his reassignment to the Sunderban. As the narrative unfolds, Dutta learns about the formidable Hujja Gang and seeks assistance from former police officer Poritosh Sarkar (Loknath Dey) in his investigation. The plot revolves around how Animesh Dutta employs his intellect to dismantle the human trafficking syndicate.

Saswata Chatterjee delivers a remarkable performance as Animesh Dutta, the stalwart police officer from the Special Crime Branch. Director Raj Chakraborty skillfully presents Chatterjee in an action-hero avatar, effectively showcasing his charisma, witty one-liners, and humorous facets throughout the series.

Raj Chakraborty, known for his successful filmography, including hits like Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, Challenge, Le Chakka, Shotru, Bojhena Shey Bojhena, and Parineeta, adeptly directs both the film Proloy and the web series Abar Proloy season 1. His prowess in storytelling is evident, and he has garnered numerous accolades for his directorial achievements.

Ritwick Chakraborty, acclaimed for his impeccable character selection, delivers another stellar performance as Shombhu Baba. The dynamic clash between Shombhu Baba and Animesh Dutta stands out as one of the series highlights.

Koushani Mukherjee shines as Mohini Ma, Shombhu Baba's assistant, with a captivating portrayal. Her portrayal of Mohini Ma, a character distinct and demanding, marks a milestone in Mukherjee's career, and her potential is clearly on display. Similarly, Gaurav Chakrabarty's portrayal of Kanu leaves a lasting impression, a testament to Raj Chakraborty's adeptness in harnessing their talents to the fullest.

Noteworthy contributions also come from Paran Bandyopadhyay as Binod Bihari, Loknath Dey as Poritosh Sarkar, Partha Bhowmick as Karali Babu, and Sohini Sengupta as Madhabi. But Debasish Mondal and Saayoni Ghosh's talents appear underutilized in Abar Proloy season 1.

Raj Chakraborty's Abar Proloy season 1 serves as an enthralling masala entertainer, enriched by his adept storytelling and the outstanding performances of Saswata Chatterjee and the ensemble cast. It is undeniably a captivating watch that combines action, intrigue, and top-tier acting.
