Apurva (2023) Movie Review: Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's top-notch storytelling

The film's narrative unfolds around Apurva (Tara Sutaria), who embarks on a bus journey to Agra with the intention of surprising her fiancé, Sidharth (Dhairya Karwa), on his birthday.

Meanwhile, a gang of robbers, consisting of Sukha (Abhishek Banerjee), Jugnu (Rajpal Yadav), Balli (Sumit Gulati), and Chhota (Aaditya Gupta), travels in a car along the same route as the bus. Jugnu, at the wheel, signals the bus to overtake, but the bus driver refuses. In the ensuing altercation, the gang stops the bus, kills the driver, and proceeds to rob the passengers. Amid the chaos, Sukha discovers Apurva's phone, dropped in fear.

When Sidharth calls, Sukha answers, leading to a verbal clash that escalates into Sukha kidnapping Apurva. The central question arises: Can Apurva escape from the clutches of the gang? Will Sidharth manage to rescue his fiancée?

Apurva's strength lies in its exceptional writing and Tara Sutaria's stunning performance. Sutaria adeptly delivers the required emotional depth and shines in the film's thrilling moments.

Writer-director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat merits praise for the film's tight script and ability to captivate us. Bhat provides ample justification for each plot development, ensuring realism through meticulous detailing, such as in the portrayal of the kidnapping.

The on-screen chemistry between Apurva and Sid is well-developed, receiving a substantial amount of focus. This attention to detail contributes to the overall engagement of the film.

Abhishek Banerjee, portraying Sukha, once again showcases his acting brilliance by navigating the complexities of his character. Sukha's duality — displaying brutality in the act of kidnapping yet expressing a twisted love for Apurva — adds depth to the narrative.

Rajpal Yadav's portrayal of Jugnu is noteworthy, deviating from his typical roles and providing a refreshing performance. Dhairya Karwa as Siddharth delivers an adequate performance, while Sumit Gulati (Balli) and Aaditya Gupta (Chhota) make meaningful contributions to the film with their characters.

Rakesh Chaturvedi Om's portrayal of Astrologer Tara Chand is commendable despite limited screen time. The film successfully maintains a high level of engagement, offering minimal dull moments throughout.

The spine-chilling survival thriller Apurva premiered on Disney Plus Hotstar on November 15, 2023. For Tara Sutaria, this film can be a pivotal moment in her career. Considering her previous roles, her performance in Tadap was decent, but Heropanti 2 and Ek Villain Returns left almost forgettable impressions. Apurva, with its compelling narrative and Sutaria's standout performance, holds the potential to redefine her career trajectory.
