Boudi Canteen Movie Review: Subhashree Ganguly delivers a captivating performance

Boudi Canteen (2022) Bengali Movie Review:

Director Parambrata Chattopadhyay's Boudi Canteen starring Subhashree Ganguly, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, & Soham Chakraborty in the lead roles was released in theatres on 30th September 2022.

The story of Boudi Canteen revolves around Poulami (Subhashree Ganguly), a teacher by profession who loves cooking a lot. Her loving and caring husband Sourish (Parambrata Chattopadhyay) is a journalist who aspires to become a writer someday.

Poulami’s mother-in-law(Anusua Majumdar) also supports her to become independent but she refrains her from getting attached to the kitchen. To keep her one step closer to her dream Sourish helped Poulami meet with Bablu (Soham Chakraborty) who is the owner of a food delivery company. Bablu happily accepted the deal to deliver food to his customers that will be cooked by Poulami.

The problem arose when Sourish faced a financial crisis. Will Poulami be able to fulfill her dreams and support her family to get rid of this bad situation?

Three reasons that made Boudi Canteen a perfect gift for audiences during this Durga Puja are:

1. Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s brilliant storytelling

2. Subhashree Ganguly’s captivating performance

3. The fantastic on-screen chemistry of Subhashree Ganguly and Parambrata Chattopadhyay

One thing I really like about Parambrata Chattopadhyay as a director is that he likes experimenting with various scripts. Just look at his directorial movies like Jiyo Kaka, Hawa Bodol, Feluda, Lorai: Play to Live, Shonar Pahar, Tiki Taka, Bony, Abhijaan, and now Boudi Canteen. The concepts are different in all these movies and even though a few of these didn’t perform well at the Box Office, he is trying harder to bring something that can win the audience’s hearts.

Releasing a family drama on the same day when you have movies like Vikram Vedha, Ponniyin Selvan 1, Kacher Manush, and Karnasubarner Guptodhon was a big challenge and he accepted it.

It is really good seeing Subhashree Ganguly delivering some solid performances back to back after Parineeta which I feel was a big turning point in her career. Parineeta was released in 2019 then she came back in 2022 with Habji Gabji, Dharmajuddha, and Bismillah. She will be also featured in upcoming Bengali movies like Doctor Bakshi, Paakhi, & Megh Peon.

Subhashree Ganguly and Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s on-screen chemistry was appreciated by audiences in Habji Gabji and they did not disappoint audiences in Boudi Canteen too. In fact, the audience will love to see this pair more often.

Anusua Majumdar also looks convincing. Soham Chakraborty delivers a good performance here but his character deserved a bit more focus. Joy Sarkar's music composition and Tiyash Sen's cinematography deserve a mention here. The two flaws I can mention here are: at times the narrative became a bit slow and the climax was very predictable.

Final Words

Boudi Canteen Movie is a complete family drama retelling us about women’s empowerment and it is worth watching because of Subhashree Ganguly’s magnificent performance and Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s brilliant storytelling.
