Bismillah (2022) Review: Story, Performance & Analysis

With the arrival of new technologies and people, we have seen over time many old technologies and talented people struggle to survive either to keep up with the pace or by sticking to their principles.

The story of Bismillah tells us about the struggle of an acclaimed shehnai player Ustad Rashid Ali (Kaushik Ganguly). He is more impressed with his younger son Bismillah (Riddhi Sen) than his eldest son Hamid (Padmanabha Dasgupta) due to his talent in music.

Hamid has a wrong attitude towards the family and he doesn’t really care about them other than sending money which Ustad Rashid Ali doesn’t accept and sends him back though they face enough problems to earn money. Bismillah was passionate about playing flutes initially but later had to move to shehnai. Once he started playing shehnai he received accolades from one and all.

His life changed when he met Fatima (Subhashree Ganguly) but due to a few things do not go in their favour he had to marry Uma (Surangana Bandyopadhyay). The rest of the story revolves around Bismillah’s extraordinary musical journey.

Director Indraadip Dasgupta failed to create the magic in Bismillah that he did in Kedara. I felt the stories of both Bismillah as well as Kedara, are good enough but Bismillah lost the pace after the interval, and that impacted the execution.

The composition by Indraadip Dasgupta and lyrics by Srijato and Padmanabha Dasgupta are the best things about Bismillah.

Barring a few romantic scenes, Riddhi Sen looks mature as an actor for the character of Bismillah. Kaushik Ganguly as Rashid Ali is highly impressive. Subhashree Ganguly as Fatima looks convincing. Surangana Bandyopadhyay as Leela and Uma looks okay.

Padmanabha Dasgupta as Hamid Ali, Bidipta Chakraborty as Shakila, Gaurav Chakrabarty as Shibu, Aparajita Auddy as Momina, and Agnijit Sen as Fuyad provided ably support in Bismillah.

Final Words

Bismillah is a musical blockbuster by Indraadip Dasgupta that has solid performances by Kaushik Ganguly and Riddhi Sen.
