Ray Series Review: Story & Performances

The Ray web series is a brilliant way to pay tribute to the legend Satyajit Ray. The four episodes of this anthology series were based on the short stories of the prolific writer-filmmaker. “Forget Me Not” and “Bahrupiya” are directed by the genius Srijit Mukherji.

Vasan Bala’s Spotlight and Abhishek Chaubey’s “Hungama Hain Kyon Barpa” are the other two stories we saw on Netflix’s Ray.

Forget Me Not (Based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Bipin Chowdhury'r Smritibhrom)

The Mirzapur web series fame Ali Fazal was the male lead of Forget Me Not. His character Ipsit Rama Nair will keep you hooked to your seat. He is a young entrepreneur, enjoying the taste of success.

The company “Chrysalis” was established by him along with some of his friends. He was also assisted by his colleague Maggie(Shweta Basu Prasad). The two interesting facts about Ipsit are, he is pretty good with numbers and his memory which tells us that he never forgets anything.

In the very opening scene, Rhea Saran(Anindita Bose) tried to give a reminder to Ipsit about the time they spent together in Aurangabad’s Ajanta Caves. But his memory which is often compared to a computer was unable to remember those times.

Our curiosity to know how he forgot those days, and what exactly happened during those days, made the story more engaging. Slowly, he started forgetting other events and numbers also. At one stage he was even unable to remember his room number.

The conversation between Ali Fazal & Shweta Basu Prasad in the hospital, the scenes with Anindita Bose, and the scenes in Ajanta Caves, were the best parts that have blown our minds and made “Forget Me Not” the most impressive among the four stories.

Ali Fazal was simply outstanding as Ipsit. Along with him, two powerful performances were delivered by Shweta Basu Prasad and Anindita Bose.

The collaboration of two geniuses Srijit Mukherji and Ali Fazal was certainly amazing & entertaining. Srijit Mukherji has made his directorial debut in Bollywood with the Vidya Balan starrer movie Begum Jaan. It was a remake of his directorial Bengali movie Rajkahini starring Rituparna Sengupta.

He also made his OTT debut last year with the web series Feluda Pherot Season 1 on Addatimes. We will also see Feluda Pherot season 2 soon.

Bahrupiya (Based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Bahurupi)

Kay Kay Menon portrayed the character of Indrashish Shah in “Bahrupiya”. He is a makeup artist who felt frequently ignored and undervalued by people around him. He planned for revenge on those people who did not treat him well. The end twist will leave you completely surprised.

It was a magnificent performance from Kay Kay Menon. We have seen him doing a cameo in the recently released movie “Shaadisthan” starring Kirti Kulhari. Rajesh Sharma as Suresh Sharma, Bidita Bag as Debashree Roy, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya as Peer Baba supported well with short but noteworthy performances.

Hungama Hain Kyon Barpa (Based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Barin Bhowmik-er Byaram)

Abhishek Chaubey directed the “Hungama Hain Kyon Barpa” episode was based on kleptomania. Many of us are in awe of Manoj Bajpayee’s mind-blowing performance in The Family Man Season 2.  His character of Musafir Ali in Ray will bring a smile to your face.

Musafir Ali, a Ghazal singer, while traveling to Delhi by train met with ex-wrestler Aslam Baig(Gajraj Rao). Their conversations, the funny scenes, and the delightful writing will make leave you impressed.

Director Abhishek Chaubey has managed to give the audience enough reason to smile by creating the magic with the help of two amazing performers Manoj Bajpayee & Gajraj Rao.

He made his directorial debut with the movie “Ishqiya” starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah & Arshad Warsi. He also directed Dedh Ishqiya, Shahid Kapoor starrer Udta Punjab, Late Sushant Singh Rajput starrer movie Sonchiriya.

Spotlight (Based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Spotlight)

Vasan Bala is mostly known for his crime thriller “Peddlers” starring Gulshan Devaiah.

The rising star Vikram, aka Vik(Harshvardhan Kapoor), has delivered back-to-back commercial hit films. On the next day of his arrival at Jodhpur, he had to move from his favourite the famous Madonna room for a spiritual leader named Didi(Radhika Madan).

This was undoubtedly the best performance of Harshvardhan Kapoor till date. Valuable performances were also added by Chandan Roy Sanyal as Roby Ghosh and Radhika Madan as Didi.

Chandan Roy Sanyal has highly impressed the audiences with his performance in director Prakash Jha’s debut web series Aashram starring Bobby Deol, Aaditi Pohankar & Tridha Choudhury, Anupriya Goenka, Darshan Kumar in lead roles.

Harshvardhan Kapoor made his acting debut in Bollywood with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s movie Mirzya co-starring Saiyami Kher.

If you haven’t watched Ray yet then switch to “Netflix” and experience the glimpses of magic created by the greatest ever Satyajit Ray.
