Animal (2023) Movie Review: Sandeep Reddy Vanga & Ranbir Kapoor’s maiden collaboration is a box-office blockbuster

The story of Animal revolves around Ranvijay Singh Balbir (Ranbir Kapoor), nicknamed Vijay, the son of the business tycoon and owner of the company Swastik Steels, Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor). Ranvijay considers his father a superhero since childhood, but as he grows up, his actions become more violent, prompting Balbir Singh to take strict action against him by sending him to a boarding school in the USA.

After 20 years, Vijay returns with his wife Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandanna) and their two children upon hearing the news that his father has been shot with two bullets. Vijay embarks on a mission to find the culprit who attacked his father and seeks revenge.

The strongest aspect of Animal is the way Sandeep Reddy Vanga presents Ranbir Kapoor's Ranvijay. This marks the Bollywood superstar's first appearance in a hardcore action thriller, and he excels in every action sequence, including the longest and most intense one just before the interval, lasting around 15 minutes. It remains one of the most engaging scenes in the film.

Anil Kapoor as Balbir Singh looks very impressive, and the writing of his character is robust. The versatile actor appears flawless even at his age, showcasing impeccable dialogue delivery, expressions, and handling of emotional scenes. This is not surprising, considering his more than 44 years in the industry since his debut in 1979 with the film Hamare Tumhare, although he made his lead role debut in "Woh Saat Din" in 1983.

Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali looks outstanding, with the writing of her character and her performance surpassing that of Pushpa: The Rise. Tripti Dimri as Zoya looks convincing. The film's highlight is the heartfelt, emotional, engaging, and impactful conversation between Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in the climax.

Previously, Sandeep Reddy Vanga presented Vijay Deverakonda and Shahid Kapoor in violent characters in Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh, respectively. Ranbir Kapoor's character in Animal is darker compared to Vanga's previous lead characters, showcasing Kapoor's effectiveness under a skilled director.

Harshwardhan Rameshwar's background score and the music composition by JAM8, Vishal Mishra, Jaani, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Ashim Kemson, and Harshwardhan Rameshwar complement the story well. Amit Roy's cinematography is also praiseworthy in this film, jointly produced by T-Series Films, Bhadrakali Pictures, and Cine1 Studios. The post-credit scene serves as an announcement for Animal's sequel, titled Animal Park.

Areas needed improvement in the film include:

1. Inconsistent screenplay by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Pranay Reddy Vanga, and Saurabh Gupta, especially after the interval, where the pace slows down tremendously for the next half an hour.

2. Sandeep Reddy Vanga, editing the film single-handedly for the first time, leaves room for improvement, with potential areas for editing to reduce the overall runtime of 201 minutes.

3. The writing for Bobby Deol's character falls short, despite the actor delivering an impressive performance with limited screen presence.

4. Actor Shakti Kapoor, in the role of Mishra, remains mostly underutilized.

5. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's recurring theme of male characters' violence against women, seen in Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and now Animal, warrants caution.

Records held by Ranbir Kapoor's Animal:

1. It earned the third-highest opening for a Hindi film with Rs 54.75 crore, standing behind Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan (Rs 65.50 crore) and Pathaan (Rs 55 crore).

2. This marks the biggest opening day collection for a film starring Ranbir Kapoor.

3. It earned the third-highest opening from national chains (PVRInox & Cinepolis) with a massive Rs 24.40 crore, standing behind Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan (Rs 29.96 crore) and Pathaan (Rs 27.02 crore).

4. It holds the record for the biggest non-holiday opening in Hindi cinema to date, with a collection of Rs 116 crores worldwide.

Animal OTT Release Date:
