Dakghor (2023) Review: Story & Performances

Dakghor is not the official adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s play Dak Ghor. The comedy-drama comprising 7 episodes directed by Abhrajit Sen was released on Hoichoi on 24th February 2023.

The plot revolves around Damodar Das (Suhotra Mukhopadhyay) who joined as the new Postmaster at the Hagda post office.  He is the son of Chakradhar Das who was the previous Postmaster at Hagda. Chakradhar Das committed suicide and thus Damodar was appointed. The villagers consider Chakradhar a ghost that’s why they call Damodar the ghost’s son and they are afraid of the ghost.

His arrival makes the villagers happy as they can send as well as receive letters, avail benefits of money orders, etc. Madhusudan (Kanchan Mullick) is Damodar’s assistant at the post office. Will Damodar be able to survive at the Hagda post office overcoming all the barriers?

A few scenes that deserve a mention here:

The scene when Damodar was welcomed by the villagers at the Hagda post office. He was given a seat to sit but unfortunately, the chair broke down and you won’t be able to stop laughing.

Madhusudan (Kanchan Mullick) invited postmaster Damodar for lunch at his house. But arriving there Damodar understood by their treatment that Madhusudan actually invited him for his daughter Rani’s marriage proposal. The conversation between them and Damodar’s expressions was hilarious.

Reasons why you should not miss Dakghor on Hoichoi:

The spectacular performance by Suhotra Mukhopadhyay is the primary reason for keeping this web series at the top of your watch list. This is certainly the best performance of Suhotra in his career till date, his hard work and dedication towards the work are clearly visible. We have earlier seen him delivering some top-notch performances in Indu, Indu 2, Eken Babu 6, Gora, & Paap season 2, etc. He looks perfect as the sincere Postmaster Damodar.

Ditipriya Roy as Damodar’s love interest Monjori looks convincing. The backstory was missing about Monjori which could add some more depth to the story.

The sweet moments between Damodar and Monjori including the scene where they both cried sitting in the middle of a beautiful field are the best parts of Dakghor. Both were given an unglamorous role and both have nailed it.

Kanchan Mullick as Madhusudan delivers a praiseworthy performance here. A backstory should have been given about his twin brother Jadhusadan’s character. Korok Samanta who delivered a very good performance in Shikarpur had nothing much to do in Dakghor.

The background score by Subhadeep Guha, cinematography by Shaan (WICA), Mrinmoy Nandi, & the editing by Subhajit Singha were the other highlights of this series.

Last but not least director Abhrajit Sen’s brilliant execution has made this series a must-watch for everyone. And Damodar rightly said, “A letter can do a lot, a letter can change a life”.
