Vicky Zahed's directorial mystery thriller Rumi, starring Chanchal Chowdhury, Reekita Nondine Shimu, Abdullah Al Sentu, Abdun Noor Shajal, MD Shahdat Hossain, Afia Tabassum, Deepa Khandakar, and Anwar Shahi, premiered on Hoichoi on 10th April 2024.
The story revolves around a genius detective, Rumi (Chanchal Chowdhury), whose intuition, observation, and way of handling a mystery make him stand out from the rest. He lives with his maid, Torikul (Abdullah Al Sentu), and is unable to resolve the death mystery of his mother, who, according to the initial investigation, is said to have died in an accident nearly a year ago.
His colleague, Aryan (Abdun Noor Shajal), is never happy with Rumi’s success, but Ashraf Khan (Anwar Shahi), the Director of CIB, and colleague Isha (Reekita Nondine Shimu) are very fond of Rumi’s work. Rumi lost his eyesight in an accident, and the department gave him a farewell, considering he wouldn't be able to work anymore.
In his dream, he sees a girl getting murdered, and the next day he learns from Isha that a girl named Neha, matching his description, has been murdered. Will Rumi as a blind detective be able to solve the death mysteries of his mother and Neha?
Chanchal Chowdhury in the titular role is a treat to watch. Almost every scene he is featured in will keep you engaged. His punchlines like "Baaghe Chhule Aatharo Gha, Police Chhule Chhotris Gha Ar Kana Police Chhule Bahattor Gha," and the poetic lines will catch your attention.
Director Vicky Zahed deserves appreciation for utilizing Chanchal Chowdhury’s full potential and bringing out the best in him. The investigation part looked convincing, especially the scenes of interrogating people in a tea stall were interesting. This film is quite different from Vicky Zahed’s recent works, including Tikit and Ararat.
All the lead characters were well-developed, and the twist at the end will leave you stunned. Rumi’s relationships with Isha & Torikul are another major aspect of this film that makes the narrative intriguing. Reekita Nondine Shimu had a good screen presence, and she utilized it quite well. Abdullah Al Sentu looks convincing as Torikul. Abdun Noor Shajal as Aryan and MD Shahdat Hossain as Boshir provided good contributions with their performances.
The screenplay in the first three episodes was brilliant, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Amit Chatterjee’s background score perfectly complements the thrilling narrative. Aurnob Hasnat’s editing and Bidrohi Dipon’s cinematography were decent. The VFX work is quite impressive here.
Vicky Zahed’s top-notch storytelling and Chanchal Chowdhury’s stunning performance make Rumi a must-watch mystery thriller on Hoichoi.
