Last Defenders of Monogamy Review: Chanchal Chowdhury & Mustafa Sarayar Farooqui's Collaboration Impresses Again

Mustafa Sarayar Farooqui's directorial romantic drama Last Defenders of Monogamy, starring Chanchal Chowdhury and Xefer Rahman, is streaming on Chorki. The story revolves around middle-aged business owner Shafkat (Chanchal Chowdhury), who runs an agency, and the young and charming Lamia (Xefer Rahman), who works in his agency.

Shafkat is married to Samina (Samina Hussain Prema), and they have a son, Shuddho, and a daughter, Rai (Prottoyee Prothoma Rai). Within three months of Lamia joining the office, Shafkat starts developing feelings for her. Will Shafkat confess his feelings to Lamia? What will happen to Samina, Shuddho, and Rai?

Mustafa Sarayar Farooqui's storytelling is top-notch. The writing by Mustafa Sarayar Farooqui and Jobaed Ahsan is brilliant. The emotional scenes are perfectly executed, complementing the effective dialogue writing. For instance, the dialogue from Samina to Shafkat at the climax, "Shuddho and Rai's father is a horrible person?", could have easily been written as "Is Shafkat a horrible person?" A person will be genuinely emotional when someone is referencing him/her from their children's perspective.

Chanchal Chowdhury has portrayed many challenging characters in his career, and this one was certainly a big challenge for him, which he portrayed perfectly. Xefer Rahman, on her debut, delivers an impressive performance. However, she has a lot to improve in the emotional scenes, and her character is missing a backstory, which is the main reason the only emotional scene she was part of at the climax did not look organic.

Chanchal Chowdhury’s son, Shuddho, making his debut with Last Defenders of Monogamy, delivered a decent performance. Samina Hussain Prema's character should have been given a bit more focus, and there was room for improvement in the writing by adding some more depth to Shafkat and Samina's relationship, which I felt was missing here. Prottoyee Prothoma Rai as Rai looks okay.

Pavel Areen's background score and music composition are another major highlight of this film. Tahsin Mahin's editing and Murshed Bipul's cinematography are passable. Chanchal Chowdhury starring another web series Rumi premiered on Hoichoi recently.
