Mobaroknama (2023) Review: Mosharraf Karim & Shahnaz Sumi are impressive

Mobaroknama (2023) Web Series Review:

The story centers around lawyer Mobarok (Mosharraf Karim), who has been out of practice for quite some time. His life takes a turn when Biltu and Suraiya (Shahnaz Sumi) show up at his door seeking help in a case. Biltu informs Mobarok that Suraiya has been raped by her brother-in-law Roman (Sayed Zaman Shawon), who is married to Suraiya’s sister, Abida (Samia Othoi). Suraiya, having been thrown out of her house by her mother, Parvin Begum (Shilpi Sarkar), wants Mobarok to defend her and seek justice.

Despite being haunted by a tragic past, Mobarok initially rejects the case but later agrees to take it on. The question remains: will Mobarok be able to secure justice for Suraiya?

The mystery thriller Mobaroknama features solid performances from Mosharraf Karim and Shahnaz Sumi. While the courtroom drama is partly engaging, the dialogue writing by Abdullah Al Muktadir could have been more refined. A notable scene is when Mobarok emphasizes the importance of “A woman’s no means no” and “you can’t force yourself on a woman.”

Shahnaz Sumi, portraying Suraiya, delivers a brilliant performance. Whether in emotional scenes or presenting her case to Mobarok, she impresses throughout. Golam Sohrab Dodul’s direction is decent, and Sabnam Faria, as Mobarok’s wife Nitu, shines in her initial scenes with her husband. Nowrin Hassan Khan Jenny, as Roman’s sister Sabnin, provides good support with a decent performance. Samia Othoi, portraying Abida, delivers a convincing performance. Unfortunately, Sayed Zaman Shawon's portrayal of Roman is the weakest link in this series.

The music and background score by Saqi Banerjee are impressive, and the editing by Subhajit Singha, along with the cinematography by Kamrul Hasan Khosru, looks satisfactory. While the story itself is not unique, the execution is well done. The series premiered on Hoichoi on December 21, 2023.
