Jawan (2023) Movie Review: Story and Performances

Before delving into the review of 'Jawan,' I would like to inform you that director Atlee's 'Jawan,' which hit theaters worldwide on 7th September 2023, achieved a remarkable milestone by recording the highest single-day collection in Hindi cinema, raking in a staggering ₹68.72 crores.

The film amassed ₹144.22 crores in all languages on its opening day and continued its impressive run, collecting ₹240.47 crores after two days and ₹384.69 crores after three days at the box office.

The film begins with a scene set near India's border, where a young boy discovers a body floating in the water and alerts his mother. The injured and unidentified individual is taken to a nearby village, where the villagers rally to provide him with medical care.

Their act of kindness is soon met with an attack by a gang, and the mysterious stranger becomes their savior. As gratitude pours in from the villagers, he becomes increasingly curious about his own identity. A young boy promises to help him discover it when he grows up.

The story fast-forwards by 30 years to an event involving a hijacked train. The hijackers, led by a man claiming to be Vikram Rathore (played by Shah Rukh Khan), have killed a woman and demanded to negotiate with someone representing the system in order to ensure the safety of the 376 passengers on board.

Narmada Rai Rathore (Nayanthara) is appointed to negotiate with the hijackers and is instructed to bring Agriculture Minister Naresh Gossain. His task is to secure ₹40,000 crores with the help of a businessman. Within minutes, a call from the business tycoon Kaalie Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi) assures them of the funds. This decision is influenced by Kaalie's daughter, Alia Gaikwad (Ashlesha Thakur), who is also aboard the hijacked train.

In another subplot, Jailer Azad (Shah Rukh Khan) is awarded the United Nations Public Service Award for his exceptional service. He decides to adopt a girl named Suchi Rai (Seeza Saroj Mehta), only to discover that she is Narmada Rai Rathore's daughter. Over time, Azad and Narmada build a strong bond and plan to get married. However, a secret about Azad threatens to disrupt their relationship.

'Jawan,' produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment and co-produced by Gaurav Verma, unravels the mysteries surrounding Kaalie Gaikwad, Vikram Rathore, the hijacker's motives, and any potential connection between Azad and Vikram Rathore.

There are four reasons behind the Tsunami Jawan brings to the box office:

Shah Rukh Khan:

SRK continues to rule the box office and capture the hearts of audiences, even after 31 years in Bollywood. While he was initially known as a romantic hero in the 1990s and 2000s, his mass action avatar showcased in Siddharth Anand's action thriller Pathaan has left everyone awestruck. Jawan's collections affirm that he remains the King of Bollywood, excelling in dialogue delivery, emotional scenes, and his face-off with Vijay Sethupathi.

Director Atlee:

Presenting Shah Rukh Khan on a larger-than-life canvas while meeting audience expectations, considering his stardom, was no small feat. Director Atlee had previously made a mark with films like 'Theri,' 'Mersal,' and 'Bigil,' collaborating with Superstar Vijay to deliver mass-action entertainers. However, achieving the same in Bollywood, especially with someone of Shah Rukh Khan's stature, was a formidable challenge that Atlee successfully conquered.

Action Sequences:

Jawan boasts perfectly executed action sequences, thanks to the efforts of six action directors – Sunil Rodrigues, Anal Arasu, Spiro Razatos, Yannick Ben, Kecha Khamphakdee, and Craig Macrae. Their contributions deserve full credit for the film's thrilling action.

Collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Director Atlee:

The collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Director Atlee was one of the most highly anticipated partnerships in recent memory, and it has exceeded all expectations.

Final Words

Jawan is a paisa vasool (value for money) action entertainer that showcases spectacular performances, particularly Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role. Nayanthara as Narmada Rai Rathore and Vijay Sethupathi as antagonist Kaalie Gaikwad also deliver noteworthy performances.

The supporting cast, including Priyamani, Deepika Padukone, Sanya Malhotra, Sunil Grover, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, and Girija Oak, make valuable contributions. However, the film's writing could have been stronger, as the plot lacks depth, and the story often feels like another conventional revenge drama with a fight against corruption and the system.
