Gumraah (2023) Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

Investigating officer Shivani (Mrunal Thakur) arrives at the crime scene & was unhappy with the way the juniors were investigating a murder case. She gave them the idea of the possible situation that might have happened with the victim. Her boss ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) also arrived there to get the details. As soon as he found a clue from a person showing the presence of Arjun Sehgal (Aditya Roy Kapur) at the victim’s place in the photo ACP Dhiren Yadav became desperate to prove Arjun guilty. But there is a twist in the plot that became a barrier for Dhiren Yadav in succeeding in his mission. Will ACP Dhiren Yadav be able to prove Arjun a murderer?

Debutant Director Vardhan Ketkar failed to understand how to utilize Aditya Roy Kapur and as a result, what we get from him is a mediocre murder mystery lacking any exciting element in it.

Aditya Roy Kapur has the potential but he followed the template and did not try anything going out of the box. He looked overdramatic in the scene when he was taken to the police station. If you look at Arun Vijay in the Tamil version and Ram Pothineni in the Telugu version both looked very much convincing. We are yet to see some extraordinary performances from Aditya Roy Kapur after Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Some of the poorly executed scenes are when drunk Aditya Roy Kapur was taken to the police station & when Ronit Roy was shouting at juniors to desperately prove Arjun as the murderer.

Mrunal Thakur as investigating officer Shivani failed to leave any impact here. She gave far better performances in Super 30, Toofaan, & Jersey. She looked expressionless when Sooraj was letting them know about various sections of the law.

Ronit Roy once again delivered an over-the-top performance as ACP Dhiren Yadav. Vedika Pinto as Arjun’s girlfriend Jahnvi looked convincing.

The background score by Ketan Sodha was okayish but the compositions by Mithoon, Vishal Mishra, Tanishk Bagchi, & Abhijit Vaghani looked very ordinary. Also, the editing by Sahil Nayar could have been far better.

It’s high time Bollywood directors should start rethinking their execution strategy before going for a remake. Films like Shehzada, Selfiee, & Bholaa failed to make a mark at the box office already and Gumraah has been also added to that list, it will be interesting to see how Salman Khan starring Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan performs.
