Kuttey (2023) Hindi Movie Review: Story & Performances

The expectations from the debutant director Aasmaan Bhardwaj were quite high. One of the reasons was the trailer of Kuttey looked promising; another reason was his father Vishal Bhardwaj has co-written the film along with him.

The main plot has too many subplots which sometimes may confuse you about the progress of a few specific characters; also the plot complexity may ruin your expectation to see something better than Kaminey.

The director excels in utilizing 3 characters perfectly Arjun Kapoor as Gopal, Tabu as Pammi, & Kumud Mishra as Paaji. And, what will disappoint you more is that he failed to utilize the stars like Naseeruddin Shah and Konkona Sen Sharma. Both of them are the powerhouse of acting but the director kept them limited and allowed them only in a few scenes which do not make any impact on the progress of the narrative. Also, Radhika Madan who delivered convincing performances in Shiddat and appeared in a cameo in Monica, O My Darling remained mostly unutilized by Aasmaan Bhardwaj.

Arjun Kapoor who featured in the forgetful action thriller Ek Villain Returns in 2022 has bounced back with an outstanding performance as the corrupt police officer Gopal. In a few scenes, his expressions and dialogue deliveries will leave you surprised. The actor will be featured in upcoming movies like The Lady Killer, & Meri Patni Ka Remake.

Tabu once again leaves no stone unturned to impress the audience with her performance. Her dialogues and the intense look were enough to give you an idea about her acting capabilities. Last year she appeared in two blockbuster movies Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 & Drishyam 2 and she will appear in the upcoming Khufiya & Bholaa.

Kumud Mishra looks very much convincing in the character of Paaji who is often confused between right and wrong. It was interesting to see how his perception changes according to the situation.

The cinematography by Farhad Ahmed Dehlvi and the music by Vishal Bhardwaj looked fine but the editing by A. Sreekar Prasad could have been better.

Kuttey, produced by Luv Films, T-Series Films, & Vishal Bhardwaj Films was released in theatres on 13th January 2023 & earned Rs. 3.39 Crores after 3 days of business in India.
