The Eken Movie Review: Story

Professor Jayanta Biswas(Kaushik Chattopadhyay) found an ancient Vishnu idol at an exhibition in Darjeeling. He was sure that it was the same ancient Vishnu idol that was theft from a temple 30 years ago in Bankura’s Bishnupur. He was murdered while trying to expose the news.

Ekendra Sen aka Eken Babu (Anirban Chakrabarti) and his friends Bapi (Suhotra Mukhopadhyay) and Promotho (Somak Ghosh) are going for a holiday in Darjeeling.

The superintendent of police in Darjeeling has informed Eken Babu that the famous Bengali actress Bipasha Mitra (Paayel Sarkar) wanted to meet with him.

A picture along with its envelope is missing from her house since last week & she wants Eken Babu’s involvement in finding out the missing picture. He was not ready initially as they came for a holiday here for a few days but when Bipasha requested him, he agrees to solve it.

Bipasha’s close friend & Hotelier Devraj Singh (Debasish Mondal) arrived at the hotel where Eken Babu and his friends are staying. He informed about the death of his hotel’s assistant manager & requested Eken Babu to investigate & find out the murderer. The rest of the story revolves around how Eken Babu finds out the killer.

The Eken Movie Review: Performance & Analysis

One of the best things about Detective Eken Babu is the humorous part & which is unaffected in The Eken. He will make you laugh whenever he gets the chance to do so. Anirban Chakrabarti’s screen presence, dialogue delivery, and expressions were just outstanding.

The brilliant performance of Debasish Mondal in Mandaar signaled the arrival of another good performer in Bengali cinema. He did a fantastic job in the negative role of Hotelier Devraj Singh in The Eken.

Suhotra Mukhopadhyay and Somak Ghosh had little scope to show something extraordinary but both of them provided noteworthy performances with their respective characters.

Paayel Sarkar’s character did not receive sufficient focus. She has done a good job as Bipasha Mitra during her little screen time.

Director Joydeep Mukherjee’s decision to replace the characters of Bapi & Promotho with Suhotra Mukhopadhyay and Somak Ghosh was quite surprising. Both of them have the potential to deliver better performances but they were not given the desired focus in the script.

Ramyadip Saha’s cinematography, Subhadeep Guha's background score & Aamlaan Chakraborty’s composition were the other highlights of The Eken.

Final Words

The popularity of the Eken Babu show on Hoichoi was mainly because of the titular character played by Anirban Chakrabarti. The Eken movie lacked the pace & a major twist we used to see in the series. The scenic beauty of Darjeeling was another attraction of this movie. The story was quite predictable here but overall it is good for a one-time watch.
