Dabaru (2024) Teaser: Pathikrit Basu Brings Grand Master Surya Sekhar’s Life on The Big Screen

On 12th April 2024, Windows Production unveiled the official teaser of their upcoming film, Dabaru. The film is based on the life of Chess Grand Master Surya Sekhar Ganguly, who won 40 individual gold medals in national and international tournaments and was a six-time National champion (2003–2008). This is the first-ever film based on chess in the history of Indian cinema.

Directed by Pathikrit Basu, the film stars versatile actors like Rituparna Sengupta, Chiranjit Chakraborty, Dipankar De, Kaushik Sen, Shankar Chakraborty, Kharaj Mukherjee, and Biswanath Basu. Samadarshi Sarkar and Arghya Basu Roy will play the role of Surya Sekhar Ganguly at different ages.

The nearly one-minute teaser begins with Dipankar De portraying the character of Souro’s grandfather, Navin Kumar, helping young Souro understand that chess is called the King’s Game. The story will tell us how Souro, from the streets of North Kolkata, overcomes every obstacle to win the Grandmaster title. The teaser ends with his dialogue: “The true measure of a big player is not how well they perform but rather how well they recover from setbacks.”

Rituparna Sengupta will portray the character of Souro’s mother, Karuna Devi. Shankar Chakraborty will portray Souro’s father, while Kaushik Sen will be seen as Souro’s teacher in the film. The teaser looks promising, and given Nandita Roy-Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s content selection, audiences will surely be entertained by this film.

Pathikrit Basu's last directorial venture was "Kacher Manush," starring De, Ishaa Saha, and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The makers are confident about the film, so they did not postpone the release due to the election, and the film will hit theatres on 10th May 2024.

Madhura Palit, whose recent works in Dadur Kirti and Chhobi Biswas were quite impressive, is handling the cinematography of Dabaru. The screenplay has been written by Aritra Banerjee, Arpan Gupta has written the dialogues, and Bonnie Chakraborty and Prosen have composed the music. Bonnie Chakraborty is also responsible for the background score of the film.

Rituparna Sengupta will be also featured in Kaushik Ganguly's upcoming film Ajogya co-starring Prosenjit Chatterjee while Chiranjit Chakraborty will be seen in Daawat-e-Biryani, Dhumketu, & Parnashavarir Shaap 2.
