Varisu (2023) Tamil Movie Review: Vijay Returns With Another Family Entertainer

Varisu (2023) Tamil Movie Review: Vijay and Vamshi Paidipally’s maiden collaboration crossed 100 crores in 3 days

Vamshi Paidipally directed Varisu starring Vijay, Rashmika Mandanna, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shaam, Jayasudha, Yogi Babu SJ Suryah, Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Sangeetha, Suman was released in theatres on 11th January 2023.

The family drama which was earlier titled Thalapathy 66 was also released in Telugu titled Vaarasudu. The movie clashed with Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu on Pongal and has a box office collection of Rs 103 crores after 3 days of business worldwide.

The story of Varisu (Vaarasudu) revolves around the business magnate Rajendran (Sarathkumar) who has high hopes for his two sons Ajay Rajendran (Shaam) & Jai Rajendran (Srikanth) but doesn’t say a single word about his 3rd son Vijay Rajendran (Vijay). Vijay has no interest in his father’s business. Rajendran tells his sons to compete against each other for the position of Chairman.

On the 60th birthday of Rajendran Ajay and Jai were exposed by their enemies and the family broke down. Knowing his severe disease Rajendran approaches Vijay to take over the Chairman’s position. Will Vijay accept his father’s offer? Will he be able to save the business and family from their enemies?

The main problem with Varisu is its weak plot. The same kind of story has been narrated by many directors multiple times. The storyline is very much predictable from the beginning and boring at times. The only thing that will keep you on the edge of your seat is watching superstar Vijay continue his magnificent acting, punch lines, actions, and dance moves.

Rashmika Mandanna’s character has nothing much to do and I will say this is another area director Vamshi Paidipally failed to look into. The contest between Protagonist and Antagonist was forgetful because of the poor writing of Prakash Raj’s character. Yogi Babu SJ Suryah, Sarathkumar, Prabhu, & Sangeetha delivered decent performances with their respective characters.

The length was too much as per the plot and the editor Praveen KL could easily cut a few scenes to keep the length 15-20 minutes short. The timing of a few songs looked wrong and 3 songs would have been ideal for this film. The cinematography by Karthik Palani & music composition by Thaman S were other notable areas of this film.

Finally, Varisu (Vaarasudu) is an entertaining family drama packed with the powerful performance of superstar Vijay and barring that one area nothing is interesting about this film.
