Doctor G (2022) Hindi Movie Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

The story of Doctor G revolves around Dr. Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) who is not happy about getting the opportunity in the gynecology department at a government medical college because he wants to shift to the orthopedics department.

Being unaware of the top male gynecologist, he thinks the gynecology department is for women only. His mother Shobha Gupta (Sheeba Chadha) is happy that he is not into pathology. His best friend Chaddi (Abhay Mishra) suggested him to take whatever he got.

After he joined the college he was surrounded by all women around him including Dr. Fatima Siddiqui (Rakul Preet Singh), Dr. Jenny Jacob (Priyam Saha), Dr. KLPD aka Kumudlatha Pamulparthi Diwakaran (Shraddha Jain) and the senior doctor Nandini (Shefali Shah). What will happen to Dr. Uday Gupta? Will he continue or shift to the orthopedics department?

Ayushmann Khurrana is a genius in especially portraying characters in social issues-related scripts. Though he has not done a lot of films since his debut in 2012 with the movie Vicky Donor, he has been able to capture a place in the audience’s hearts with his natural acting.

In Doctor G he lives the character of Dr. Uday Gupta. He brilliantly showcased Dr. Uday Gupta’s struggle in listening to women’s voices, his own interest, and understanding his near & dear ones’ preferences which are praiseworthy.

After making her debut with Rangeela in 1995 Shefali Shah, one of the finest actresses in Bollywood is consistently delivering fine performances that are winning audiences’ hearts. Apart from Doctor G, she has appeared in other projects like Jalsa, Darlings, Human, & Delhi Crime Season 2 in 2022. Only one common factor in all these projects you will find is her seriousness in portraying each one of these characters with utmost perfection.

In Doctor G she does not have a great screen presence yet the way she portrays her character of senior doctor Nandini deserves a lot of appreciation. Still, I will say director Anubhuti Kashyap somehow missed focusing a bit more on her character.

Rakul Preet Singh as Doctor Fatima Siddiqui looks convincing. Sheeba Chaddha once again delivered a good performance. Abhay Mishra, Shraddha Jain, Priyam Saha, Ayesha Kaduskar, Paresh Pahuja, and Indraneil Sengupta delivered decent performances with their respective characters.

Apart from the good comedy, there was a few unconvincing dialogues at the beginning but the narrative gets more engaging in the second half. But I think the last 30 minutes were more engaging than the entire movie.

Barring a few flaws I must say, it’s a fairly good attempt from debutant director Anubhuti Kashyap to enter Bollywood with a medical fiction movie like Doctor G which is entertaining in major parts.

Prerna Saigal’s editing, Eeshit Narain’s cinematography, and the music by Amit Trivedi, Sultan Sulemani, & Amjad Nadeem Aamir deserve a mention.

Final Words:

Director Anubhuti Kashyap’s medical fiction Doctor G is worth your time and money due to the unique story and solid performances by Ayushmann Khurrana and Shefali Shah.
