Jagame Thandhiram Review: Story & Performances

Earlier the makers decided to release the Jagame Thandhiram movie in theatres but due to the pandemic, they had to opt for the OTT release.

Writer & Director Karthik Subbaraj introduced us to the three lead characters of the movie. Suruli(Dhanush), a paratha restaurant owner of Madurai, is also involved in gangster activities.

Peter (James Cosmo), The British crime lord, an anti-immigration racist. Sivadoss (Joju George), an Eelam Tamil in the UK, an arms dealer, and biggest rival of Peter. We have recently seen The Family Man Season 2 with a story based on Eelam Tamil.

Just a few hours before his engagement, Suruli killed the brother of a well-established businessman in the city, and the incident made his life more difficult staying back there in Madurai.

Peter needs a Tamil gangster to take down his rival Sivadoss. Vicky(Sharath Ravi) also a Tamil guy who lives in London, approached his boss about Suruli. After listening to the story from Vicky, Suruli agreed to go to London for a hefty amount of money.

In London, Suruli met with Attila (Aishwarya Lekshmi), a nightclub singer, and fell in love with her. She has many secrets which she doesn’t share with anyone. After helping Peter to kill Sivadoss, Suruli came to know through Attila about his mistakes and he was filled with remorse. He promised Attila to take revenge on Peter.

It will be quite unfair if we expect logic in the film as there are a few scenes that might seem completely illogical. A few scenes looked a bit funny, like the one when Vicky tries to convince Suruli for coming to London, and another one was when Suruli first time met with Peter.

Karthik Subbaraj previously directed hit movies like Iraivi, Mercury, and Petta. He has tried to highlight the social issue through this movie with his convenient writing.

Dhanush was the show stealer of the Jagame Thandhiram, delivering another brilliant performance at ease. Aishwarya Lekshmi also looked convincing. James Cosmo, mainly famous for Game of Thrones, did a decent job as the antagonist.

What is good about this film?

Dhanush is the only reason you can watch this movie. His dialogue delivery, comic timing, and action sequences everything was superb. Santhosh Narayanan's background score was another positive side of this movie.

What is bad about this film?

The weakly written characters might make you realize that Joseph Joju George’s character deserved more attention.
