The White Tiger Movie Review: Story & Performances

The main story is based on Aravind Adiga’s novel The White Tiger which won the 2008 Man Booker Prize.

We saw, in the beginning, Balram Halwai(Adarsh Gourav) narrates his own story to us. He was born in Laxmangarh, a small village of Bihar. He was a meritorious guy from his childhood but due to a lack of financial support from his family, he had to leave his studies in his early school days.

His grandmother had forced him to work and earn for the family. Due to lack of treatment for tuberculosis his father died soon.

The day he saw Ashok(Rajkummar Rao) in their village for the first time, he decided to work as a driver for him.

We have already seen some top performances from Rajkumar Rao in the movies like Ludo, Omerta, Chhalaang, etc.

Ashok was born in India but grew up in America. He was married to Pinky(Priyanka Chopra Jonas).

He learnt driving and requested his Ashok’s Saras(Mahesh Manjrekar) to keep him as their second driver. After getting the complete background details of Balram they accepted his proposal.

After joining there, Balram was looking for opportunities to take the position of 1st driver. He found the weakness of that first driver and blackmailed him to take his position.

Slowly Balram became their favorite driver and closer to Ashok & Pinki. On Pinki’s birthday, she requested Balram to drive the car herself. While she was busy in a conversation with Ashok, she ran over a little girl on the road. Balram handled the situation and took them quickly out of that place.

The White Tiger is about how the servants treat their masters in India. The servants often compromise many things in their life for the masters. Sometimes the master-servant relationship is like a trap that any servant rarely could come out from.

Director Ramin Bahrani won the hearts of many people with such beautiful storytelling. He was also able to bring out the best in Adarsh Gourav.

We have seen many stories already about the caste and class divisions in India but this one was special.

Adarsh Gourav puts a remarkable performance here and no doubt he was the show-stealer. Rajkummar Rao & Priyanka Chopra Jonas also provided valuable performances.

If you have not watched The White Tiger film of 2021 on Netflix yet, then you can add it to your watch list.
