Two phenomenal actors. One unforgettable screen pairing. And more than a decade of films that became a part of Bollywood history! Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit were one of the most successful and beloved on-screen pairs of the late 1980s and 1990s.
From intense romances and family dramas to action entertainers and comedies, they explored different kinds of characters and stories together. Their chemistry was energetic, natural and incredibly entertaining, making audiences come back to see them together again and again. And their journey together eventually spanned 13 films.
So today, let's take a nostalgic journey through the films that brought Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit together on screen.
Their journey began with Hifazat in 1987. Directed by Prayag Raj, with music by Rahul Dev Burman, Hifazat was released on 18 September 1987. Anil Kapoor played Raj Kumar and Ram, while Madhuri Dixit played Janki. This film marked the beginning of a screen partnership that would become one of the most memorable pairings of its generation.
Then came the film that truly changed the game — Tezaab. Directed by N. Chandra and featuring music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Tezaab was released on 11 November 1988. Anil Kapoor played Mahesh Deshmukh, better known as Munna, while Madhuri Dixit played Mohini Dhanyekar. The film became a major success and gave audiences one of the most iconic songs of Hindi cinema — Ek Do Teen. It also established Anil and Madhuri as a pair that audiences wanted to see together.
In 1989, they returned with Ram Lakhan. Directed by Subhash Ghai, with music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, the film was released on 27 January 1989. Anil Kapoor played Sub-Inspector Lakhan Pratap Singh, while Madhuri Dixit played Radha Shastri, Devdhar's daughter and Lakhan's love interest. The film became one of the defining entertainers of its era, combining action, drama, romance and family emotions.

Later that same year came Parinda. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and featuring music by Rahul Dev Burman, Parinda was released on 3 November 1989. Anil Kapoor played Karan Choudhary, while Madhuri Dixit played Paromita Nair, better known as Paro. Unlike their more commercial entertainers, Parinda gave them a darker and more intense dramatic setting.
In 1990, their collaboration continued with Kishen Kanhaiya. Directed by Rakesh Roshan and featuring music by Rajesh Roshan, the film was released on 9 March 1990. Anil Kapoor appeared in a double role as Kishen and Kanhaiya, while Madhuri Dixit played Anju, Kanhaiya's wife. The film allowed Anil Kapoor to showcase his comic timing and versatility while once again giving audiences the opportunity to see him and Madhuri together.
That same year, they appeared in Jeevan Ek Sanghursh. Directed by Rahul Rawail, with music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, the film was released on 3 August 1990. Anil Kapoor played Karan Kumar, while Madhuri Dixit played Madhu Sen.
Just a few months later, the pair returned with Jamai Raja. Directed by A. Kodandarami Reddy and featuring music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, the film was released on 19 October 1990. Anil Kapoor played Raja, while Madhuri Dixit played Rekha. The film brought a lighter, comic side to their pairing and became another memorable collaboration between the two stars.
In 1991, they reunited for Pratikar. Directed by T. Rama Rao, with music by Bappi Lahiri, Pratikar was released on 16 August 1991. Anil Kapoor played Krishna Shrivastav, while Madhuri Dixit played Madhu.
Then came one of their biggest and most celebrated collaborations — Beta. Directed by Indra Kumar and featuring music by Anand–Milind, Beta was released on 3 April 1992. Anil Kapoor played Raju, while Madhuri Dixit played Saraswati. The film became a major success, and Madhuri's performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Their chemistry once again became one of the film's biggest highlights.
The same year brought another collaboration — Zindagi Ek Juaa. Directed by Prakash Mehra, with music by Bappi Lahiri, the film was released on 15 May 1992. Anil Kapoor played Harikishan, while Madhuri Dixit played Juhi.
Just a few months later, they appeared together in Khel. Directed by Rakesh Roshan and featuring music by Rajesh Roshan, Khel was released on 14 August 1992. Anil Kapoor played Arun and Devdas, while Madhuri Dixit played Seema.
After this incredible run during the late 1980s and early 1990s, their next collaboration came with Rajkumar in 1996. Directed by Pankaj Parashar and featuring music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Rajkumar was released on 22 March 1996. Anil Kapoor played Rajkumar, while Madhuri Dixit played Rajkumari Vishaka.
At this point, their journey already represented nearly a decade of memorable collaborations.
But there was still one more film to come. After Rajkumar, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit reunited in Pukar in 2000. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Pukar brought the two stars together once again, this time in a dramatic action story. And with Pukar, their on-screen filmography reached 13 collaborations.
