John Abraham’s character Kabir in Dhoom became a major turning point in his career transforming his image from primarily a romantic and dramatic actor into a stylish action star with strong screen presence. Even today, the character remains one of the most memorable antagonists in 2000s Hindi cinema.

At the 6th IIFA Awards, John Abraham won the Best Villain award for his performance as Kabir. Before the release of Dhoom, John Abraham had appeared in films such as Jism, Saaya, Paap, Aetbaar and Lakeer, where he was largely seen in romantic or dramatic roles.
So, when he appeared as the antagonist in an action film like Dhoom, his transformation immediately impressed audiences. In Dhoom, John Abraham played Kabir, the leader of a sophisticated gang of motorcycle-riding robbers.
What immediately made Kabir stand out was that he was not written as a conventional, loud or over-the-top villain. He was confident, intelligent, stylish and extremely composed. He carried himself like someone who genuinely believed that he was always in control. That personality became one of the defining qualities of the character.
John Abraham understood that Kabir did not need excessive dialogue or exaggerated expressions to establish his authority. His performance was largely controlled and understated, allowing Kabir’s confidence and attitude to speak for themselves. His physical presence added to the character, but it was the combination of composure, arrogance and intelligence that truly made Kabir memorable.
John Abraham’s face-off with Abhishek Bachchan, who portrayed ACP Jai Dixit, was another exciting aspect of the film. Their contrasting personalities created one of the central conflicts of Dhoom, with Jai relying on his intelligence and determination while Kabir constantly projected confidence and control.
John Abraham’s casting was particularly effective for the role. At the time, his screen image and appearance perfectly suited Kabir’s youthful, stylish and rebellious personality. Kabir needed to look convincing as someone capable of commanding a group while also possessing the confidence to challenge the authorities, and John Abraham brought exactly that quality to the character.
Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and produced by Aditya Chopra, Dhoom was released in theatres on 27 August 2004. The film starred Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Uday Chopra, Esha Deol and Rimi Sen in the lead roles, while Manoj Joshi, Aarav Chowdhary, Farid Amiri and Ayesha Raza appeared in supporting roles.
Made on an estimated budget of ₹11 crore, Dhoom earned approximately ₹72.5 crore worldwide, making it a commercial success and the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2004.
