Interestingly, the role of Aarfa Ali Khan was initially offered to Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut, but after both actresses declined the project, Anushka Sharma was cast as the female lead.

Written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films, Sultan featured cinematography by Artur Zurawski, editing by Rameshwar S. Bhagat, a background score composed by Julius Packiam, and songs composed by Vishal–Shekhar.

Made on a budget of approximately ₹90 crore, Sultan emerged as a massive blockbuster at the Indian box office. The film collected around ₹300 crore nett in India and finished its theatrical run as the second highest-grossing Hindi film of 2016, behind Aamir Khan's Dangal. Its powerful performances, emotionally engaging storyline, inspirational sports backdrop, and memorable music made it one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.

The story revolves around Sultan Ali Khan, who is a former wrestling champion living a quiet life in Haryana, is persuaded by Aakash Oberoi to return to the ring for a mixed martial arts tournament. Through flashbacks, Sultan's journey unfolds—from falling in love with wrestler Aarfa Hussain, achieving international success, and becoming an Olympic champion to losing his newborn son and drifting apart from Aarfa due to his arrogance.

Determined to fulfill his dream of opening a blood bank in his son's memory, Sultan makes a remarkable comeback under coach Fateh Singh. After overcoming injuries and personal struggles, he wins the tournament, reunites with Aarfa, and fulfills his son's final legacy.

The character of Sultan Ali Khan was portrayed by Salman Khan, Aarfa Ali Khan by Anushka Sharma, Fateh Singh by Randeep Hooda,
Aakash Oberoi by Amit Sadh and Barkat Hussain by Kumud Mishra.

Salman Khan delivered one of the strongest performances of his career. His physical transformation—from a young, ambitious wrestler to an overweight,
retired champion and back to peak fitness—added authenticity and emotional depth to the character.

While wrestling forms the backdrop, the heart of the story lies in Sultan's relationship with Aarfa and the emotional consequences of his personal decisions.
Themes of marriage, ambition, parenthood, and redemption resonated strongly with viewers.

Anushka Sharma received praise for portraying Aarfa as an independent and accomplished wrestler rather than a conventional love interest.
Supporting actors like Randeep Hooda, Amit Sadh, and Kumud Mishra further strengthened the narrative.

Ali Abbas Zafar balanced mass entertainment with emotional storytelling. He avoided making the film solely about wrestling, instead using the sport to tell a deeply human story.

Songs like "Jag Ghoomeya," "Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai," "440 Volt," and "Bulleya" became hugely popular before and after the film's release, boosting its appeal.
The film featured impressive cinematography, authentic locations, detailed production design, and polished action sequences, enhancing the theatrical experience.
Releasing during the Eid holiday gave the film a significant boost. Salman Khan's Eid releases had become a major event, drawing large family audiences.
Strong reviews and audience appreciation led to sustained box-office collections over several weeks, resulting in exceptional lifetime earnings both in India and overseas.

The wrestling matches were choreographed with realism and intensity. Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma underwent extensive training, which made the bouts feel believable and exciting.

The film follows Sultan Ali Khan's rise, fall, and redemption. Audiences connected with his journey of love, loss, regret, and self-discovery, making it more than just a sports film.

Sultan became one of the biggest blockbusters of 2016 because it successfully combined sports drama, romance, family emotions,
and commercial entertainment into a film that appealed to a wide audience.
