After starting his directorial journey in 2003 with the action thriller film Zameen, director Rohit Shetty took a break from the action genre films and his next 5 projects were all from comedy genre. He took enough time to retun to the action genre and he made sure to return with a bang. He returned to the action genre with his 7th directorial venture film Singham.
Starring Ajay Devgn, Kajal Aggarwal, Prakash Raj in the lead roles, the film was released in theatres on 22 July 2011. Made on a budget of Rs 41 crores, the film earned rs ₹141.3 crore worldwide gross collection and became superhit at box office, became 6th highest grossing Hindi film of 2011.
Interestingly, Asin and Anushka Shetty were being considered for the female lead role but finally Kajal Aggarwal was selected for the role. The film marked Kajal Aggarwal'a Bollywood debut in a lead role and her maiden collaboration with director Rohit Shetty and Superstar Ajay Devgn.
The success of this film led to sequels Singham Returns and Singham Again also Rohit Shetty's Cop Universe which included Ranveer Singh starring Simmba and Akshay Kumar starring Sooryavanshi and all of these became box office success.
Singham became a blockbuster for many reasons. One of the film's biggest strengths was the face-off between Bajirao Singham and Jaikant Shikre. Their clash of ideologies—honesty versus corruption—created constant tension, and Prakash Raj's menacing performance made the conflict even more engaging.
Ajay Devgn perfectly embodied the fearless, no-nonsense police officer. His intense dialogue delivery, action sequences, and commanding screen presence made Singham an instantly iconic character, connecting strongly with single-screen as well as multiplex audiences.
Rohit Shetty blended action, drama, comedy, romance, and emotion into a complete entertainer. The larger-than-life action scenes, crisp pacing, and crowd-pleasing moments appealed to a wide audience.
Beyond the action, the story carried emotional weight through Inspector Rakesh Kadam's tragic death and Singham's determination to restore his honour. The film's themes of justice, integrity, and standing up against corruption resonated with audiences.
Dialogues like "Aata Majhi Satakli" became hugely popular, while songs such as "Saathiya" and the energetic title track added to the film's appeal. Combined with whistle-worthy action and satisfying payoffs, the film generated excellent word of mouth and repeat viewership.
The story of Singham was written by Hari and the film is based on his 2010 Tamil blockbuster Singam. It was produced by Reliance Entertainment, with Dudley handling the cinematography and Steven H. Bernard serving as the editor. The film's background score was composed by Amar Mohile, while the songs were composed by the acclaimed music duo Ajay–Atul.
