Director Sooraj Barjatya, a name synonymous with family entertainers and romantic dramas, experienced his first commercial setback with Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon after delivering three back-to-back blockbusters. Based on Chitchor by Basu Chatterjee and Chittachakor by Subodh Ghosh, the film was released in theatres on 27 June 2003.
Starring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles, the film marked the maiden collaboration between Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan.
Produced by Rajshri Productions and distributed by Yash Raj Films, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon also marked the fourth collaboration between Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor after Yaadein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Mujhse Dosti Karoge.
Made on a budget of ₹24 crore, the film collected a total India net box office of ₹17.79 crore, resulting in a commercial failure. The film was also special as it marked the second collaboration between Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor after Refugee.
Written and directed by Sooraj Barjatya and produced by Ajit Kumar Barjatya, Kamal Kumar Barjatya, and Rajkumar Barjatya, the film featured cinematography by Rajan Kinagi, editing by Mukhtar Ahmed, and music composed by Anu Malik.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon marked Sooraj Barjatya’s fourth directorial venture after Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, and Hum Saath-Saath Hain. It also marked his maiden collaboration with Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan.
Additionally, the film was the 9th lead-role film for both Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan, and Kareena Kapoor’s 11th film as a lead actress.
The story revolves around Sanjana who is a lively young woman who does not believe in arranged marriage, but agrees to meet Prem after her sister recommends him. Though she initially dislikes his cheerful personality and constantly pranks him, their bond slowly turns into love.
Soon after Prem leaves for the U.S., the family discovers a shocking misunderstanding — the man Sanjana fell in love with was not wealthy businessman Prem Kumar but his employee, Prem Kishen. As emotions become complicated and families arrange Sanjana’s marriage elsewhere, truth and sacrifice redefine their relationships. In the end, Prem Kumar realizes their love and reunites Sanjana with Prem Kishen.
The character of Sanjana Satyaprakash was portrayed by Kareena Kapoor, Prem Kishen Mathur by Hrithik Roshan, Prem Kumar by Abhishek Bachchan, Suraj Satyaprakash by Pankaj Kapoor, Susheela Satyaprakash by Himani Shivpuri, and Poonam Kumar by Reema Lagoo.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon remains one of those Bollywood films that divides audiences even today. Some people enjoy it as an energetic early-2000s entertainer, while others find it difficult to revisit because of its style and execution.
The combination of Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Abhishek Bachchan generated a lot of excitement. Hrithik especially brought huge screen presence during that phase of his career.
The film focuses on family values, romance, misunderstandings and emotional resolution, which appealed to audiences who enjoyed classic Bollywood love stories. Songs such as Bani Bani, Kasam Ki Kasam and Ladka Yeh Kehta Hai helped the film stay remembered. The soundtrack by Anu Malik had strong popularity. Director Sooraj Barjatya stayed close to his signature style of relationships, warmth and emotional storytelling.
