Krrish Movie: Budget, Box Office, Collaborations

If we talk about successful actor-director collaborations in Bollywood, then the duo of Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan will always deserve a special mention. Their successful journey together began in 2000 with the blockbuster film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.

After three years, they reunited for Koi... Mil Gaya, which also emerged as a major box office blockbuster, and again after another three years they collaborated for the superhero film Krrish.

Directed, produced, and written by Rakesh Roshan, Krrish featured screenplay by Sachin Bhowmick, Rakesh Roshan, Akarsh Khurana, Honey Irani, and Robin Bhatt, while dialogues were written by Sanjay Masoom.

The film marked Rakesh Roshan’s 11th directorial venture and his 3rd collaboration with Hrithik Roshan after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Koi Mil Gaya. It also marked his maiden collaboration with Priyanka Chopra.

Krrish also marked the first on-screen collaboration between Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra and was Hrithik Roshan’s 12th film as a lead actor. Apart from the lead pair, the film featured important performances by Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha, Sharat Saxena, and Manini Mishra.

Cinematography was handled by Santosh Thundiyil marking his maiden collaboration with director Rakesh Roshan, editing by Amitabh Shukla marking his maiden collaboration with director Rakesh Roshan, background score by Salim–Sulaiman, and songs were composed by Rajesh Roshan. The film was produced under Filmkraft Productions Pvt. Ltd and distributed by Yash Raj Films in India.

Released on 23 June 2006, Krrish played a major role in bringing the superhero genre into mainstream Indian cinema and set a new benchmark for visual effects in Indian films. Made on a budget of ₹40 crore, the film collected ₹72.15 crore net in India and emerged as a box office blockbuster.

The film also won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects. At the 8th International Indian Film Academy Awards, it received 9 nominations and won 3 awards, while at the 52nd Filmfare Awards, it also received 9 nominations and won 3 awards.

The story revolves around Krishna Mehra aka Krrish, the son of Dr. Rohit Mehra and Nisha, who grows up in a remote village under the care of his grandmother Sonia while hiding his extraordinary powers. After meeting Priya and travelling to Singapore, Krishna adopts the identity of Krrish to save lives and later discovers that his father Rohit is alive and being held captive by the evil scientist Dr. Siddhant Arya. Krrish battles Arya, rescues Rohit, and reunites his family.

The character of Krishna Mehra aka Krrish and Dr. Rohit Mehra was portrayed by Hrithik Roshan, while Priya was portrayed by Priyanka Chopra. Naseeruddin Shah portrayed the character of Dr. Siddhant Arya, Rekha portrayed Sonia Mehra,

Krrish became a blockbuster because it delivered a unique combination of superhero action, family emotions, romance, and science fiction at a time when Indian cinema had very few large-scale superhero films. The biggest attraction was Hrithik Roshan’s performance in the dual emotional connection of Krishna and Rohit, along with his action sequences and screen presence as Krrish.

The film also benefited from the successful actor-director collaboration between Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Koi Mil Gaya, creating huge audience anticipation. The emotional bond between Krishna and Sonia, the love story between Krishna and Priya, and the father-son storyline connected strongly with family audiences.

Another major strength was its visual effects and technical presentation, which set a new benchmark for Indian cinema at that time. The superhero costume, action set pieces, and transformation scenes generated strong excitement among younger audiences.

The music by Rajesh Roshan also became highly popular, with songs helping maintain the film’s momentum. Positive word of mouth, repeat audience viewership, holiday appeal, and its blend of entertainment and emotions ultimately made Krrish a box office blockbuster.
