The date 22 June 1990 is special for Bollywood, two blockbuster Hindi films released and two talented director made their Bollywood debut. Rajkumar Santoshi's directorial debut film Ghayal starring Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Seshadri, Amrish Puri in the lead roles was released in theatres on 22 June 1990
The film also starred Om Puri Kulbhushan Kharbanda Shafi Inamdar Moushmi Chatterjee in supporting roles. The film marked director Rajkumar Santoshi's maiden collaboration with Sunny Deol, Meenakshi Seshadri, Amrish Puri
Made on a budget of ₹2.5 crore, Ghayal emerged as a massive box office success by collecting around ₹20 crore worldwide, becoming a superhit and the second highest-grossing Hindi film of 1990 after Dil.
At the 38th National Film Awards, the film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while Sunny Deol received the National Film Award – Special Mention for his performance.
The film also dominated the 36th Filmfare Awards with 8 nominations and won 7 awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Rajkumar Santoshi, and Best Actor for Sunny Deol.
Following its success, Ghayal was remade in Tamil as Bharathan (1992), in Telugu as Gamyam (1998), and in Kannada as Vishwa (1999).
The film was written by Rajkumar Santoshi, who handled both the story and screenplay, while the dialogues were written by Dilip Shukla. It was produced by Dharmendra under the banner of Vijayta Films. Rajan Kothari served as the cinematographer, V. N. Mayekar handled the editing, and the music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. The film was distributed by Vijayta Films.
