30 Years of Jaan Movie: Budget and Box Office

Thirty years ago, a romantic action drama arrived on the big screen and became a memorable commercial entertainer for the audience. The film was Jaan. Released on 17th May 1996, the film was directed by Raj Kanwar and marked another successful chapter in his directorial career as his fourth directorial venture after blockbuster films like Deewana, Laadla, and Kartavya.

The film featured Ajay Devgn in the lead role alongside Twinkle Khanna, while legendary actors like Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, and Suresh Oberoi played significant roles in the film. Produced by Ashok Ghai under the banner of Suneha Arts and distributed by Mukta Arts, the film carried a strong commercial appeal during the 90s era.

One of the biggest highlights of Jaan was that it marked the maiden collaboration between Raj Kanwar and Ajay Devgn. At the same time, this was also the first on-screen pairing of Ajay Devgn and Twinkle Khanna, which generated huge excitement among audiences during that period.

Interestingly, Jaan was only the second film of Twinkle Khanna in a lead role after Barsaat, making it an important film in her early career. For Ajay Devgn, Jaan was another milestone project as it became the 20th film of his acting career.

The story and screenplay of the film were written by Ranbir Pushp, while the dialogues were penned by Kamlesh Pandey. The film’s cinematography was handled by Harmeet Singh, editing was done by Waman B. Bhosle, and the music was composed by the popular duo Anand–Milind, whose songs added emotional depth and entertainment value to the film.

Made on a budget of around ₹4 crore 75 lakh, Jaan performed well at the box office and collected a total India nett gross of approximately ₹10 crore 8 lakh, emerging as a commercial hit. The film was later released in the USA on 31st March 1997, expanding its reach among overseas audiences as well.

Even after 30 years, Jaan remains a nostalgic film for many 90s cinema lovers. Whether it is Ajay Devgn’s intense screen presence, Twinkle Khanna’s charming performance, Amrish Puri’s commanding role, or Raj Kanwar’s emotional storytelling style, the film still holds a special place in the memories of Bollywood fans.
