Superstar Salman Khan made his acting debut with Biwi Ho To Aisi, directed by J. K. Bihari and starring Rekha, Farooq Shaikh, Kader Khan, and Bindu, where he portrayed a supporting role.
Before stepping into acting, he worked as an assistant director to Shashilal K. Nair in the film Falak. Over his career spanning nearly 36 years, he has appeared in more than 125 films, including cameos, and featured in five releases in 1991: Sanam Bewafa, Patthar Ke Phool, Kurbaan, Love, and Saajan.
Salman Khan made his debut in a lead role with Sooraj Barjatya’s romantic musical film Maine Pyar Kiya, which became an all-time blockbuster. Made on a budget of ₹1 crore, the film grossed ₹45 crore at the box office and emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film of 1989.
Bhagyashree starred opposite Salman Khan in Maine Pyar Kiya, marking both her acting debut and her first collaboration with him. The film also marked Sooraj Barjatya’s directorial debut and his maiden collaboration with both Bhagyashree and Salman Khan.
Sanam Bewafa, directed by Saawan Kumar Tak and featuring Salman Khan, Chandni, Pran, and Danny Denzongpa in lead roles, was released in theatres on 11 January 1991. Made on a budget of ₹90 lakh, the film earned an estimated ₹10.25 crore at the box office and became a commercial success.
Patthar Ke Phool, directed by Anant Balani and starring Salman Khan and Raveena Tandon in lead roles, was released in theatres on 22 February 1991. Made on a budget of ₹2.17 crore, the film collected ₹5.80 crore worldwide and was declared a hit.
Kurbaan, directed by Deepak Bahry and starring Salman Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Sunil Dutt, and Kabir Bedi in lead roles, was released in theatres on 31 May 1991. Made on a budget of ₹1.78 crore, the film collected ₹4.70 crore worldwide and was declared a hit.
Saajan, directed by Lawrence D'Souza and starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Salman Khan in lead roles, was released on 30 August 1991. With a box office collection of ₹18.35 crore, the film became a commercial success.
Love, directed by Suresh Krissna and starring Salman Khan and Revathi in lead roles, was released in theatres on 15 November 1991. Made on a budget of ₹2.30 crore, the film collected ₹2.37 crore worldwide and was declared a flop.
