Birangana Web Series Review: Niranjan Mondal is the show stealer

Nirjhar Mitra's directorial crime thriller web series Birangana, starring Sandipta Sen and Niranjan Mondal in the lead roles, was released on Hoichoi on 25th July 2025. The plot of this web series revolves around the serial killing of newlywed brides, particularly those marrying for the second time and having a child with them.

SI Chitra Basu (Sandipta Sen), initially ignored by the entire team for being a woman, is later included in the investigation team to track down the killer. How Chitra Basu and her team uncover the identity of the serial killer forms the crux of the series.

Niranjan Mondal as Chirayu is the show-stealer. What a performance — and that too on his debut, in a negative role. While the writing of his character could have been better, he delivers an impressive performance, especially shining in the emotional scenes in the last two episodes.

Pratik Dutta as Dheeraj Sinha, the officer leading the investigation, delivers a solid performance despite limited screen time. Though Sandipta Sen as SI Chitra Basu does not appear entirely convincing, she performs well in the only action sequence of the series and in the climax portion.

Nirjhar Mitra fails to live up to the expectations set by his earlier two series, Shikarpur and Dainee. Both Shikarpur and Dainee were strong in storytelling, character development, and overall execution, but Birangana falters first in its character development, then with execution.

The backstory of Sandipta Sen’s character was underdeveloped; her sudden inclusion in the investigation team, despite being sidelined by the entire squad, felt unconvincing. The investigation itself was weak and felt rushed. Pratik Dutta, who leads the team, had hardly any opportunity to contribute meaningfully, a missed opportunity, as his character had scope but only got 2–3 impactful scenes.

The director draws a parallel between the protagonist and antagonist, both facing similar challenges in life, yet one chooses the dark world of crime while the other strives for a crime-free city. A talented actress like Sreya Bhattacharyya, who stunned audiences in Beline, was wasted here with a near-empty role that gave her nothing substantial to do.

Nabarun Bose’s background score is decent, but the placement of songs from some of SVF’s blockbuster films felt unnatural and lacked impact. Nirjhar Mitra's crime thriller web series Birangana on Hoichoi is a decent one-time watch with a few good aspects.

Rating: 5/10
