Aarii Movie Review: Moushumi Chatterjee Shines in a Modestly Moving Family Drama

Jiit Chakraborty's directorial family drama film Aarii starring Yash Dashgupta, Moushumi Chatterjee, and Nusrat Jahan in the lead roles, was released in theatres on 25th April 2025

Story:

The story revolves around Jaya (Moushumi Chatterjee), an ailing mother battling dementia, and her devoted son Joy (Yash Dasgupta)

Aditi (Nusrat Jahan), a writer intrigued by their story, meets the mother and son and becomes deeply invested in understanding

Joy’s journey and struggles—what unfolds next forms the heart of the narrative.

What Worked:

What truly works in the film Aarii is Moushumi Chatterjee’s nuanced portrayal; she effortlessly balances humor with heartfelt emotion, leaving a lasting impact on the narrative. Yash Dasgupta puts in a sincere effort, especially shining a bit more in the emotional moments.

It’s a step in the right direction, but continued refinement will be essential if he wishes to delve deeper into this genre in future projects.

Partho Bhowmik and Debraj Bhattacharya delivered commendable performances in their respective roles as Trilok and Lalon, contributing steadily to the narrative.

Unmesh Ganguly is decent as Bubai, handling the role just as it was written, without much scope to stand out.

The music composition by Keshab Dey, Lincon, and Anindya Chattopadhyay stands out as one of the film’s highlights, particularly with memorable tracks like Dakat Poreche and the Aarii title track.

What Didn't Work:

The inclusion of Nusrat Jahan’s character appears forced, lacking a meaningful contribution to the progression of the script.

The backstory of Nusrat Jahan’s character and her entry into the mother-son duo’s life felt unconvincing, as the narrative lacked sufficient buildup and contextual events to justify her presence.

The screenplay lacked depth, resulting in underdeveloped character arcs and a noticeable absence of chemistry between Yash Dasgupta and Nusrat Jahan on screen.

The relationships between Yash Dasgupta and Unmesh Ganguly, as well as between Yash Dasgupta and Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, lacked depth and emotional development, making the bonding feel superficial.

Talented actors like Kamaleshwar Mukherjee and Abhijit Guha were underutilized, with their characters lacking the depth and screen presence they deserved.
