Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt and Shantanu Maheshwari Starring Film Completed 3 Years

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial biographical crime drama film Gangubai Kathiawadi completed 3 years. The film was produced by Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay Leela Bhansali under the banners of Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited.

Featuring Alia Bhatt in the lead role, the film hit theatres on 25th February 2022, bringing to life the compelling story of Gangubai Kathiawadi. The film marked Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 10th directorial venture and his first collaboration with Alia Bhatt and Shantanu Maheshwari.

Adapted from S. Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the story revolves around Gangubai Kathiawadi, an innocent young woman from Kathiawad who is deceived into a life of prostitution. Over time, she transforms into a formidable madam, wielding influence in Bombay’s red-light area.

Alongside Alia Bhatt, the film boasted a stellar supporting cast, including Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh, and Ajay Devgn, each delivering impactful performances.

The screenplay was crafted by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Prakash Kapadia, and Utkarshini Vashishtha, with Pen Marudhar Entertainment overseeing the film’s distribution. The film marked Alia Bhatt's maiden collaboration with Shantanu Maheshwari and Ajay Devgn.

The film, made on a budget of around Rs 100 crores, achieved a box office collection of around Rs 209 crores and became the 5th highest-grossing Hindi  film of 2022.

The film marked the 4th collaboration between Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Guzaarish, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat.

At the 69th National Film Awards, Gangubai Kathiawadi won 5 awards, including Best Actress-Alia Bhatt, Best Adapted Screenplay-Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Utkarshini Vashishtha, Best Screenplay – Dialogue-Utkarshini Vashishtha and Prakash Kapadia, Best Editing-Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Best Makeup-Preetisheel Singh D’Souza.

At the 68th Filmfare Awards, Gangubai Kathiawadi stood out as the most celebrated film, leading with 17 nominations and clinching 11 wins, reaffirming its critical and commercial success.

At the 23rd IIFA Awards, the film continued its winning streak, securing 11 nominations and taking home 5 prestigious awards. The film served as Shantanu Maheshwari’s Bollywood debut, showcasing his transition from television to the big screen. The film marked director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2nd collaboration with Ajay Devgn after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

The film’s cinematography was handled by Sudeep Chatterjee, while Sanjay Leela Bhansali served as the editor. Bhansali also composed the songs, with the background score crafted by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara.
