Bougainvillea Movie Review

Amal Neerad's directorial psychological thriller film Bougainvillea starring Kunchacko Boban, Jyothirmayi, Fahadh Faasil, Veena Nandakumar, was released in theatres worldwide on 17th October 2024. The film was inspired by Lajo Jose's novel Ruthinte Lokam & premiered on SonyLIV from 13th December 2024.

The story of Bougainvillea revolves around Reethu (Jyothirmayi), plagued by retrograde amnesia after a life-altering accident eight years ago, is tenderly cared for by her husband, Dr. Royce (Kunchacko Boban), with support from their maid, Rema (Srindaa). Their tranquil life takes an unexpected turn when ACP David Koshy (Fahadh Faasil) arrives at their doorstep, investigating the mysterious disappearance of a VIP’s daughter.

Jyothirmayi’s portrayal of Reethu is both compelling and layered, making her character the emotional and psychological centerpiece of the film. Kunchacko Boban skillfully brings nuance to the role of Dr. Royce, capturing both his tenderness as a husband and his unease as events unravel.

Fahadh Faasil’s talent feels underutilized, as his role lacks the depth needed to leave a lasting impression. Veena Nandakumar lends credibility to the role of Meera Yasodhara, though her performance occasionally feels out of sync with the narrative's tone.

The film's final 40 minutes are gripping, with a captivating twist that will leave you utterly stunned. Anend C Chandran’s cinematography beautifully captures the film’s eerie atmosphere, Sushin Shyam’s background score intensifies the suspense and emotional depth.
