Baaji (2024) Web Series Review: Arifur Rahman's Impressive Storytelling

Director Arifur Rahman’s mystery thriller Baaji, starring Tahsan Khan, Manoj Pramanik, Rafiath Rashid Mithila, and Nazia Haque Orsha in the lead roles, premiered on Chorki this Eid Al Adha.

The series starts with a cricket match where the audience is shouting the name of a player, Abir (Tahsan Khan), but he gets out for a duck on the second ball he faces in the game. After the game, he goes live and hints that something is not right in his life, promising to announce exactly what is going on in the evening of the same day.

The death of a rising cricketer named Apu (Partho Sheikh), who scored a century on his debut and won the match almost single-handedly for the Golden Dreams team at the SPL 2024 tournament, makes Abir very emotional. A journalist named Jiniya (Rafiath Rashid Mithila) is fighting with her editor, who is unable to publish her content about Abir as it looked unconvincing to him.

Apu’s brother, Topu (Manoj Pramanik), who is a police inspector, is unable to accept the fact that his brother is no more. Will Topu be able to resolve the death mystery of Apu?

The concept and execution of Baaji are praiseworthy. We do not see much content in Bengali related to cricket or match-fixing. Director Arifur Rahman deserves appreciation for the brilliant execution. He developed the subplots really well, showing us the personal crises of characters associated with match-fixing.

The on-screen chemistry between Manoj Pramanik and Partho Sheikh looked convincing. The fight between these two brothers, Apu and Topu, over every little thing has been incorporated into the script nicely. Partho Sheikh looks okay even in a limited screen presence. Nazia Haque Orsha and Shahdat Hossain’s characters were poorly written.

Manoj Pramanik looks good in the emotional scenes, but overall, he delivered a decent performance. Rafiath Rashid Mithila as Jiniya delivered a convincing performance. The writing of her character could have been much better, which would have made the investigation part more thrilling. Tahsan Khan as Abir provided a decent performance, though he needs to improve a lot in the emotional scenes. A little more detailing on the cricket part would have made the series more interesting.

Aditya Sengupta and Hasanat’s story writing was impressive, but the screenplay by Hasanat fails to keep the audience engaged in the middle episodes. Barring a few one-liners, the dialogues by Hasanat looked pretty ordinary and less effective. Jahid Nirob has been impressive with the background score, while Sumon Sarker did a decent job with the cinematography. However, the suspense build-up was impressive in the first three episodes, thereafter it became predictable.

The mystery thriller web series Baaji on Chorki is worth watching because of the unique concept and brilliant execution by Arifur Rahman, with some watchable performances from Rafiath Rashid Mithila, Tahsan Khan, Manoj Pramanik, and Partho Sheikh.
