Asur Season 1 Web Series Review: Story and Performances
Asur Season 1 is a Hindi web series released on the streaming platform Voot Select on 2nd March 2020. The series, created by Gaurav Shukla and directed by Oni Sen, stars Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti, Anupriya Goenka, Ridhi Dogra, Sharib Hashmi, & Amey Wagh in lead roles.
The series begins with the introduction of Nikhil Nair (Barun Sobti), a forensic expert who has returned to India after working in the United States for a long time. Nikhil is recruited by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to help solve a string of murders that have taken place in the city. These murders are gruesome and seem to be connected to ancient Indian mythology.
The CBI team is led by Dhananjay Rajpoot (Arshad Warsi), a forensic expert and a former professor of Nikhil's. The two have a history, and their relationship is strained. Dhananjay is known for his unconventional methods and his belief in the existence of evil, which he refers to as "Asur." He believes that the killer they are looking for is someone who understands the concept of Asur and is using it to commit these murders.
As the investigation progresses, the team discovers that the murders are part of a larger conspiracy, and they must race against time to solve the case before the killer strikes again. Along the way, they are aided by a hacker named Lolark Dubey (Sharib Hashmi) and a journalist named Nusrat Saeed (Anupriya Goenka).
One of the standout features of 'Asur' is its use of Indian mythology and ancient scriptures to create a complex and intriguing narrative. The series uses the concept of Asur, which is derived from Hindu mythology, as a metaphor for evil. The show explores the idea that evil is not something external to human beings but is a part of our nature. It is a battle that we all face within ourselves.
The show also delves into the concept of karma and the idea that our actions have consequences. The characters in the show are all grappling with their own demons and are haunted by their past. The series uses flashbacks and dream sequences to explore the characters' motivations and to provide insight into their psyche.
Another standout feature of 'Asur' is its use of technology. The series is set in the world of cybercrime and uses technology as a tool to help solve the case. The show explores the dark side of technology and the ways in which it can be used to manipulate and control people.
The performances in the series are top-notch, with Arshad Warsi delivering a standout performance as Dhananjay Rajpoot. Warsi brings depth and complexity to the character which makes him one of the most interesting characters in the series. Barun Sobti is also excellent as Nikhil Nair, conveying the character's intelligence and vulnerability with ease. Anupriya Goenka is outstanding as Nusrat Saeed, bringing a much-needed sense of calm and rationality to the series.
The production values of the series are also impressive, with the show's visuals and sound design adding to the overall sense of tension and suspense. The series is shot in a dark and moody style that perfectly suits the tone of the show. The music of the series, composed by Alokananda Dasgupta, is also excellent, adding to the overall atmosphere of the show.
The series is not without its flaws, however. The show's pacing is uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed while others drag on. The series also tries to tackle too many themes and ideas, leading to some of the plotlines feeling underdeveloped.
