Projapoti (2022) Bengali Movie Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

Director Avijit Sen's Projapoti which was released in theatres on 23rd December 2022, tells us the story of Joy (Dev) who is like any other middle-class guy who worked hard to become one of the best wedding planners in Kolkata and he got full support from his loving and caring father Gour (Mithun Chakraborty). His father never made him realize the absence of his mother who died when Joy was only five years old.

Like most other middle-class parents Gour wants Joy to get married but Joy doesn’t agree initially as he thinks that with the arrival of his wife, he may fail to take care of his father. Suddenly, Gour met his childhood friend Kusum (Mamata Shankar) whom he recognized instantly after so many years.

Gour & Kusum met a few times & came closer to each other. After staying lonely for so many years, Gour is in love with Kusum now. Will Gour be able to inform Joy about his relationship? Will Gour be able to convince Joy to get married?

Director Avijit Sen deserves full credit for bringing the chemistry of Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Shankar alive on the screen. It is such a great pleasure watching two versatile actors sharing the screen after 47 years and winning the hearts of audiences.

I will say we are quite fortunate to be able to watch Mithun Chakraborty delivering this kind of powerful performance. Even at this age too his screen presence, dialogue delivery, expressions, & comic timings are outstanding. He will be also featured in the upcoming movie Baap.

Mamata Shankar on the other hand has been equally impressive as Kusum. Each of her scenes with Mithun Chakraborty is a treat to watch. Mithun Chakraborty and Dev share a sweet and emotional father-son relationship in Projapoti which is another highlight of the movie.

Dev continues his good form since last year with movies like Golondaaj, Tonic, Kishmish, & Kacher Manush and we would love to see him continuing his good run in upcoming movies like Raghu Dakat and Bagha Jatin. Here he looks good as wedding planner Joy but in his most of the scenes with his father, it was Mithun Chakraborty who will catch your attention more than Dev.

Ambarish Bhattacharya as Gour’s son-in-law and Koneenica Banerjee as Gour’s daughter delivered convincing performances too. Koushani Mukherjee and Sweta Bhattacharya’s characters did not receive much focus. Kharaj Mukherjee whose performance in Kishmish was very highly impressive remains underutilized in Prajapati.

Director Avijit Sen is absolutely brilliant in the execution of this family drama. He focused on the crucial elements that will make audiences emotional and engaged to it throughout. Music Directors Anupam Roy, Surojit Chatterjee, Rathijit Bhattacharjee, and Cinematographer Gopi Bhagat deserve a mention here for their good works.

Final Words:

Director Avijit Sen’s Projapoti is a must-watch emotional and engaging romantic comedy-drama with brilliant performances from Dev, Mithun Chakraborty, & Mamata Shankar.
