An Action Hero (2022) Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

"An Action Hero" is a film about superstar Maanav Khurana (played by Ayushmann Khurrana), known for his roles in action movies. During the shooting of one of his films, Vicky Solanki (played by Hiten Patel) visits him, hoping to gain benefits for an upcoming election. A heated conversation ensues, and Vicky accidentally dies at the hands of Maanav.

Bhoora Solanki (played by Jaideep Ahlawat), Vicky's elder brother, is determined to seek revenge for his brother's death. Maanav fears losing his fame, facing the media, and Bhoora Solanki. Will Maanav be able to protect himself from Bhoora?

Although Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat's performances are noteworthy, the film lacks in writing and character development. Certain scenes also feel unconvincing, such as Ayushmann Khurrana's struggle to portray anger naturally and the lack of clarity on when the characters are in India versus the UK.

Prior to "An Action Hero," Ayushmann Khurrana primarily appeared in romantic comedy films, earning acclaim for his performances in movies like "Vicky Donor," "Nautanki Saala," "Bareilly Ki Barfi," "Badhaai Ho," "Andhadhun," "Bala," "Dream Girl," "Gulabo Sitabo," "Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui," "Anek," and "Doctor G." "An Action Hero" marks his first foray into an action film, albeit one with limited hardcore action scenes. The action sequences featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat are visually pleasing, and the cameos by Akshay Kumar and item songs featuring Nora Fatehi and Malaika Arora provide some respite from the film's shortcomings.

Director Anirudh Iyer, who has previously worked as the first assistant director in movies like "Zero," "Tanu Weds Manu Returns," and "Happy Bhaag Jayegi," faces a challenging task with his directorial debut in "An Action Hero." While the film boasts stars like Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat, there is room for improvement in the direction and execution. Nevertheless, I am optimistic that Anirudh Iyer will continue to grow as a director and produce better movies in the future.

The cinematography by Kaushal Shah, editing by Ninad Khanolkar, and music by Tanishk Bagchi, Biddu, Parag Chhabra, and Amar Jalal are satisfactory.

In conclusion, "An Action Hero" is a film that delivers strong performances from its lead actors but falls short in terms of writing and character development. Despite some visually pleasing action sequences and enjoyable cameos and item songs, the film may not be worth investing your time in for its entire runtime of 2 hours and 10 minutes.
