Ballavpurer Roopkotha (2022) Bengali Movie Review: Story, Performances & Analysis:
The story of Ballavpurer Roopkotha revolves around King Bhupati Ray (Satyam Bhattacharya) who is burdened with debt and after finding no way to repay them he decides to sell the Rajbari. He informed three creditors Pawan (Sumanth Roy), Srinath (Surjit Sarkar), & Saha (Kripabindu Chowdhury), to help him during this bad phase.
They found Haldar (Sandeep Bhattacharya) one of the richest businessmen in Kolkata who shows interest in buying the Rajbari. Centuries-old ancestors are staying in the Rajbari as ghosts so selling it won’t be an easier task to do. Bhupati Ray’s struggle to sell the Rajbari forms the rest of the story.
The sounds design and lighting techniques of this movie are major two areas that will get your attention from the beginning. The movie tells us the kind of research and hard work the entire team has done to give us the best cinematic experience.
There have been a few instances in Bengali cinema when we have seen a movie loved by a wide range of audiences even without any big name from the Industry in it and Ballavpurer Roopkotha is one such instance.
Shyamal Chakraborty is clearly the show-stealer here. The way he has carried his character throughout the movie is highly appreciable. Surangana Bandhopadhyay delivered the best performance of her career till date. She looks gorgeous here and her character will take you back to the 1960s.
Previously she has appeared in movies like Bismillah, Tiki Taka, Samantaral, Open Tee Bioscope, and Golpo Holeo Sotti, etc. But barring a few of these she did not get the characters that could give her career a boost like the one she received in this movie.
Satyam Bhattacharya delivered a spectacular performance in this movie. His portrayal of the character King Bhupati Ray was absolutely brilliant. He made the struggle of the King look quite real and he was able to connect the audience with his character.
Surajit Sarkar, Debraj Bhattacharya, Kripabindu Chowdhury, Sandip Bhattacharya, and Sumanta Roy supported well with their respective characters.
Anirban Bhattacharya continues his magical storytelling. Though the story looks pretty simple, he keeps you engaged with his storytelling & perfectly executed comedy scenes.
With Mandaar Anirban Bhattacharya showed his maturity as a director in handling content for adult audiences. Now with Ballavpurer Roopkotha he showed his brilliance in handling content for family audiences and hopefully, we will see more of such excellent projects in the coming days.
Music directors Subhadeep Guha, Debraj Bhattacharya, DOP Soumik Haldar, and Editor Sanglap Bhowmik have done their jobs perfectly to make this movie a worthy watch.
Final Words:
Director Anirban Bhattacharya’s horror comedy film Ballavpurer Roopkotha based on Badal Sarkar’s popular drama is a masterpiece and a must-watch for everyone.
