Cuttputlli (2022) Hindi Movie Review: Story, Performance & Analysis

Arjan Sethi (played by Akshay Kumar) is an aspiring filmmaker who has spent the last 7 years researching serial killers, fascinated by their psychology. He meets with various producers to pitch his idea for a thriller film, but their suggestions always leave him frustrated.

During a visit to his elder sister Seema Singh's (Hrishitaa Bhatt) home in Kasauli to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, she and her husband Narinder Singh (Chandrachur Singh) suggest that Arjan join the police force. He agrees, and just as he is about to give up on his filmmaking dream, a producer expresses interest in his script. However, the producer asks for a small change that Arjan refuses to make, leading him to choose the police force over his film career.

Arjan helps his niece Payal (Renaye Tejani) by signing her report card, which her father had refused to do. The next day, he takes Payal to school and meets her English teacher, Divya (Rakul Preet Singh), whom he falls for instantly. As fate would have it, Divya falls for him too, and they begin a romantic relationship.

Soon after Arjan joins the police force, a serial killer begins targeting teenage schoolgirls, brutally murdering them. Arjan shares his insights and research with the SHO Gudia Parmar (Sargun Mehta), but she initially ignores his input. However, he is eventually appointed to lead the investigation and uses his knowledge to track down the killer.

Cuttputlli is a frame-by-frame copy of the Tamil thriller Ratsasan directed by Ram Kumar and starring Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul. Unfortunately, Cuttputlli does not add anything new to differentiate itself from the original except for the cast.

While it's always a treat to watch Akshay Kumar in a cop role, his recent films, including Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, and Raksha Bandhan, have not performed well at the box office in 2022. Cuttputlli is his fourth film this year, and it is also a remake of a Tamil thriller. Given his recent movie choices, perhaps he should reconsider his script selection process going forward.

Rakul Preet Singh shines as Divya and does justice to her character, while Chandrachur Singh, Sargun Mehta, and Hrishitaa Bhatt provide good support with their respective roles. Rajeev Ravi's cinematography and Chandan Arora's editing are adequate.

In conclusion, if you have already watched Ratsasan, Cuttputlli may not offer much to entice you. Ram Kumar's Ratsasan is executed brilliantly and far surpasses Ranjit Tewari's Cuttputlli.
