Chup-Revenge Of The Artist (2022) Hindi Movie Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

Inspector Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) is handed over a case to find out a serial killer who is targeting the film critic and killing them brutally. Nila (Shreya Dhanwantry) is an entertainment journalist and aspires to be a film critic. She loves movies and flowers too. She went to get some flowers at Danny’s flower shop. Florist Danny (Dulquer Salmaan) offers tulips to her and doesn’t accept payment from her.

They met quite a few times and got closer to each other. Arvind Mathur asks help from psychologist Zenobia Shroff (Pooja Bhatt) to solve the case. When all the film critics denied reviewing films anymore, Arvind Mathur went to Nila as he wants her to write a fake review for a movie that has been acknowledged by audiences so that he can catch the serial killer.

One can say this magic in storytelling by R Balki which we don’t see often because before Chup his last blockbuster movie Pad Man was released in 2018.

Unlike most other psychological thrillers R Balki tells you about the serial killer without keeping it suspense till the end. He kept the story engaging through the cat-and-mouse chase where the police catch the killer at the end only.

Also, his reference to the legend Guru Dutt with his two super hit movies “Pyaasa” and “Kaagaz Ke Phool” was beautiful. The song “waqt ne kiya kya sitam, tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum” in Geeta Dutt's voice in the background when Danny gifted paper flowers to Nila was one of the best parts of this movie.

Dulquer Salmaan as Danny has delivered one of the finest performances of his career in Chup. He has a great screen presence and his intense look and the dialogues deliveries were some of the strong areas of his character.

Shreya Dhanwantry as Nila is a treat to watch. Her on-screen chemistry with Danny was also very good.  She is choosing the right kind of scripts and experimenting with challenging projects like The Family Man, Scam 1992, etc.

Chup marks Sunny Deol’s comeback to the big screen after Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas which was released in 2019.  He has done a fantastic job as Inspector Arvind Mathur in Chup. Pooja Bhatt and Saranya Ponnavanan delivered decent performances with their respective characters.

The cameo by Amitabh Bachchan was really good when he told about the importance of critics to the Cinema for its growth.

Some of the ignorable flaws I can mention here are that the pace of the narrative became a bit slow post-interval and in a few scenes, Dulquer Salmaan’s expressions could have been better.

Cinematography by Vishal Sinha, Editing by Nayan H.K Bhadra & the music composition by Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar,& S.D.Burman is the other positive area of Chup.

Final Words:

Chup-Revenge Of The Artist is a psychological thriller directed by R Balki which is worth your money and time for the brilliant storytelling and top-notch performances.
