Bhotbhoti (2022) Review: Story, Performance & Analysis

The story revolves around Bhotbhoti (Rishav Basu) who lost his parents in his childhood and he has only his grandmother in the family. He grew up hearing fairy tales from his grandmother like many of us used to hear about mermaids.

With this belief that one day he will meet with mermaids, he used to roam around the Ganges sometimes & tries to find a mermaid going inside the water of the river. One fine day he rescues Rita Mahato (Bibriti Chatterjee) whom he considers a mermaid.

The people of the slum gather to see Rita Mahato at Bhotbhoti’s home. The rest of the story is about how Bhotbhoti deals with the situation after coming to know about Rita Mahato’s backstory, which led to their participation in terrorist activities.

Bibriti Chatterjee steals the show with a brilliant performance. The character of Rita Mahato was undoubtedly a challenging one but her dialogue deliveries and expressions in a few scenes will leave you stunned.

Rishav Basu looks okay as Bhotbhoti except in a few scenes where he could have performed better. It is good to see him trying different kinds of characters in Srikanto, Mahabharat Murders, & now in Bhotbhoti.

Director Tathagata Mukherjee deserves appreciation for trying such a concept in Bengali cinema. Audiences nowadays are keener to watch unique content and Bhotbhoti is certainly a good attempt.

In a movie where you have versatile actors like Rajatava Dutta, Monu Mukhopadhyay, Debolina Dutta, Dipankar De, Anirban Chakrabarti, and Mamata Shankar, the expectations of audiences will be slightly higher. Director Tathagata Mukherjee failed to develop their characters and utilize these actors properly.

Also, the weak writing in parts will leave you clueless and it left many questions unanswered even though the length of the movie was 2 hours 50 minutes. Mayookh Bhaumik’s music direction deserves a mention here.

Final Words

The Bengali movie Bhotbhoti is good for a one-time watch for the unique concept and Bibriti Chatterjee’s stellar performance.
