Raksha Bandhan (2022) Review: Story, Performances & Analysis

Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) has a chaat shop in Chandni Chowk and it is always crowded with customers. So, the first question that comes to your mind is what is the reason for this long line of customers? Eating gol-gappas in his shop help pregnant women deliver boy-child only.

He is overburdened when he starts thinking about how he will get his 4 sisters Gayatri (Sadia Khateeb), Durga (Deepika Khanna), Laxmi (Smrithi Srikanth), and Saraswati (Sahejmeen Kaur) married. There is one more tension in his life as his girlfriend Sapna’s (Bhumi Pednekar) father (Neeraj Sood) wants to get her daughter married earliest as possible.

Lala Kedarnath promised his mother that before he gets married he will get the sisters married. So, due to this responsibility, he is unable to respond to Sapna’s father.

He gets sleepless nights when start thinking of arranging the dowry that the groom’s family will demand for each of his sister’s marriage. Finally, he was able to arrange the dowry to get Gayatri married. But after a few months, she committed suicide and one of her neighbours publicly informed about the treatment she was receiving at her husband’s home.

Gayatri’s death shook Lala Kedarnath completely and he decided to spend all the money on his sisters instead of saving them for their marriage.

Will Lala Kedarnath be able to get his sisters married without a dowry? Will he be able to marry his girlfriend Sapna? Raksha Bandhan answers these questions in the second half.

Raksha Bandhan like many of Akshay Kumar’s recent movies is based on a social issue. But it failed to leave an impression like his earlier movies did. The story was too common and predictable and lacked twists as well as uniqueness.

People in various regions of the country are still fighting against the dowry system and domestic violence against women. So, considering those areas, the movie has sent a strong message to society but failed to provide wholesome entertainment.

Many flaws were there in the narrative that director Aanand L. Rai overlooked; even the music by Himesh Reshammiya was forgetful.  An elder brother calling and shaming his sisters by their color, weight, and whatnot was certainly unacceptable.

Akshay Kumar’s brilliant performance in this family drama will keep you hooked to your seats. Bhumi Pednekar as Sapna was convincing throughout. Neeraj Sood also did a good job as Sapna’s father.

Final Words

Akshay Kumar’s performance is the only good thing about the family drama Raksha Bandhan.
