Skater Girl Movie Review: Story & Performances

The film begins with a heartwarming scene of Ankush (Shafin Patel) riding a rudimentary skateboard while his sister Prerna (Rachel Saanchita Gupta) pulls it with a rope. They live in Khempur, a small village in Rajasthan, where people are separated based on their caste. Being from a backward class, they are often discriminated against.

Prerna's classmate Subodh (Vinayak Gupta), a Brahmin, helps her, and they form a strong friendship. However, the story takes a turn when Jessica (Amrit Maghera) arrives in Khempur for a vacation and brings a skateboard. Her friend Erick (Jonathan Readwin) also comes to the village with his skateboard, which quickly attracts the attention of the local children, including Prerna.

The kids ask Erick to teach them skateboarding, and he agrees. As the story progresses, it becomes more fascinating. The climax is a skateboarding competition that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

The film was initially called "Desert Dolphin" during its production phase. Director Manjari Makijany, who co-wrote the screenplay with her sister Vinati Makijany, is the daughter of the late actor Mohan Makijany, who played "Sambha" in the iconic Bollywood film "Sholay," starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.

The well-written characters and Salim-Sulaiman's excellent music score were the highlights of "Skater Girl." Manjari Makijany worked as an assistant director on Bollywood films such as "Wake Up Sid," starring Ranbir Kapoor, and "Saat Khoon Maaf," starring Priyanka Chopra.

Rachel Saanchita Gupta's portrayal of Prerna was outstanding, while Shafin Patel delivered a pivotal performance as Ankush. Waheeda Rahman made a cameo appearance as Maharani.

Amrit Maghera and Jonathan Readwin gave satisfactory performances. The film's message is strong and clear: parents should encourage their children to pursue their dreams and give them a chance to do what they want. Taking that one small step can change their whole lives. Overall, "Skater Girl" is an inspiring sports drama that is definitely worth a watch.
