99 Songs Movie Review: Story & Performances
The story revolves around Jay(Ehan Bhat) who is passionate
about music since his childhood. His father doesn’t like music and always tried
to keep him away from music but never succeeded.
He and his unspoken girlfriend Sophie (Edilsy Vargas), who is
an acclaimed painter, love each other very much. Jay went to Sophie’s father Mr.
Singhania (Ranjit Barot) to ask for his daughter’s hand.
Mr. Singhania was not ready to hand over her daughter to a
struggling musician, so he gave him the task of completing 100 songs and then
coming back with the marriage proposal.
His college’s best friend Polo (Tenzin Dalha), took him on a trip to their house in Shillong to help Jay with his music and completing the task.
To talk about Ehan Bhat’s performance I must admit that this
was one of the best performances by a newcomer in recent times. A tragic
backstory, his determination, passion for music, and love for Sophie, everything
has made Jay’s journey memorable in 99 Songs movie.
Edilsy Vargas also delivered a solid performance as Sophie.
Her character got a boost in the second half. Tenzin Dalha as Jay’s friend, Warina
Hussain as Jay’s mother, Lisa Ray as the jazz singer Sheela and Manisha Koirala
as the head of a rehab center also contributed with some satisfactory
performances.
No words will be enough to describe A.R. Rahman’s magical
composition in the 99 Songs movie. Last year(2020) he was nominated for the
category Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Sushant Singh Rajput starrer
movie "Dil Bechara".
The film has every element in it from the story,
romantic scenes, drama, music, and a superb ending that will make you believe
in love.
Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy’s brilliant storytelling, A.R.
Rahman’s blockbuster composition, and Ehan Bhat’s spectacular performance on
debut are highlights of the 99 Songs movie.
