Detective Bengali Movie on Hoichoi Review: Story & Performances

The story of the Bengali movie “Detective” is based on the story of Rabindranath Tagore. Detective Mahimchandra (played by Anirban Bhattacharya) who works in the Government detective department always searches for some difficult cases.

He is quite bored and disappointed with the unskilled criminals of Bengal. The story was told during the period when the British Government tried to divide Bengal. Mahimchandra is married to Sudhamukhi (played by Ishaa Saha) but he fails to give much time to his beautiful wife as he keeps himself busy reading detective books in his free time.

Mahimchandra is assisted by Hutason (played by Ambarish Bhattacharya) in the office whom he calls Watson.  Hutason follows every order given by Mahimchandra and sometimes tries to provide him some of his own input in cases.

He always gets those cases where finding the culprits is very easy and that makes him disappointed towards the criminals for their lack of planning in doing the crimes. So, he keeps planning some unique and difficult crimes in his mind and he finds interest and excitement in catching those criminals. One day he finds a guy named Manmatha (played by Saheb Bhattacharya) as someone having the potential to be a highly skilled criminal.

Manmatha and Sudhamukhi in their earlier days went to Prof. Arunabho Chattopadhyay, a freedom-fighting group’s leader for their studies. When the professor got to know that Manmatha and Sudhamukhi are in love, he thought this might distract Manmatha from their prime goal of fighting for freedom. He planned and separates them which forced Sudhamukhi for marrying Mahimchandra on her parent’s wish. But they were in touch with each other even after the marriage.

Sneha (played by Trina Saha) was Mahimchandra’s younger widow sister who supported Sudhamukhi’s household work. Mahimchandra keeps his focus on Manmatha to make him the killer of Bhupati (an old man from their locality). The rest of the story revolves around whether Mahimchandra finally succeeded in his conspiracy to prove Manmatha as a skilled criminal.

Music director Joy Sarkar was absolutely brilliant in providing some valuable music suitable to the script. Khelaghor Bandhte Legechi song which is sung by Madhuraa shows the tuneful composition of Joy.

Anirban Bhattacharya has already provided some top-class performances in his previous movies. His ability to fit into any character makes him stand out and Mahimchandra is no exception. He portrayed the character so well in “Detective”. We are hoping to get many more spectacular performances from him in the coming days also.

Saheb Bhattacharya was excellent in portraying the character of Manmatha. Ambarish Bhattacharya as Mahimchandra’s assistant was convincing throughout. Ishaa Saha as Sudhamukhi was quite effective especially her innocence as a newly married wife was noticeable. Trina Saha was good in her short appearance.

The directionless storytelling in the middle might disappoint you a little bit but it was a solid performance from the lead casts of the movie which kept the story alive.

The Detective movie is streaming on Hoichoi.
