Durgo Rawhoshyo (2023) Bengali Web Series Review: Srijit Mukherji’s top-notch storytelling

Director Srijit Mukherji's mystery thriller, Durgo Rawhoshyo, based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's novel of the same title, premiered on Hoichoi on October 19, 2023. This marks Srijit Mukherji's first foray into directing a project centered around Byomkesh Bakshi.

While many are already familiar with the story, I'd like to provide a brief overview of the plot. Byomkesh (Anirban Bhattacharya) receives joyous news that his wife, Satyabati (Sohini Sarkar), is expecting a child. Soon after, Inspector Purandar Pandey (Chandan Sen) contacts him, inviting him to investigate a new case involving the mysterious death of Professor Ishan Chandra Majumder (Biplab Chatterjee) and the hidden treasure at the fortress of Jankigarh.

Byomkesh, accompanied by his friend Ajit (Rahul Arunoday Banerjeeand Satyabati, embarks on a journey to Jankigarh to unravel the mystery. Will they succeed in solving the mystery and uncovering the hidden treasure within the fortress?

Srijit Mukherji and cinematographer Soumik Halder deserve applause for their meticulous framing and the breathtaking beauty of each shot. The camera movement and the drone shots showcasing the fortress from a distance were executed perfectly.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this series was the remarkable chemistry between the cast members, Anirban Bhattacharya, Rahul Banerjee, and Sohini Sarkar. The director has masterfully developed the dynamics among them, whether it's the chemistry between Byomkesh and Ajit, Byomkesh and Satyabati, or Ajit and Satyabati.

Srijit Mukherji previously made an impact with his OTT debut when he cast Tota Roy Chowdhury to portray Feluda's character in "Feluda Pherot," and now, with Durgo Rawhoshyo, he impresses once again.

There were several perfectly executed scenes that stood out in this series, such as Byomkesh's reaction upon hearing the news of Satyabati's pregnancy from the doctor, as well as the engaging conversations among the trio when Satyabati shared her insights on the case.

One of the standout dialogues in the series is when Byomkesh responds to Ajit, saying, "Asole Satyaneshi sobai, Ajit, sudhu sobar satya ta alada, police, CPM, Naxal, ami, tumi, Satya, emonki jader mathar gham mati te porle amader thalay gorom bhaat ase tader o".

Tamalika Golder's music composition and Subhadeep Guha's background score are also worth mentioning. However, there were some scenes where the editing by Subhajit Singha could have been improved.

The director also chose to add a twist in the climax, which we did not witness in Birsa Dasgupta's Byomkesh O Durgo Rahasya.

Anirban Bhattacharya's portrayal of Byomkesh Bakshi, Sohini Sarkar as Satyabati, and Rahul Arunoday Banerjee as Ajit delivered outstanding performances in Durgo Rawhoshyo. Chandan Sen as Purandar Pandey, Biplab Chatterjee as Professor Ishan Chandra Majumder, and Anusha Viswanathan as Tulsi also delivered convincing performances.
