Mukesh Chhabra, who is known for his work as a casting director on blockbuster films such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Dangal, Jawan, Dhurandhar and many more, made his directorial debut with Dil Bechara. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi in the lead roles, with Saif Ali Khan, Saswata Chatterjee, Swastika Mukherjee and Sahil Vaid in supporting roles, the film was released directly on Disney+ Hotstar on 24 July 2020.

The film marked Sanjana Sanghi's debut as a leading actress and her maiden collaboration with Sushant Singh Rajput. It also marked Mukesh Chhabra's first collaboration with Sushant and Sanjana as a director. However, Chhabra had previously worked with Sushant as a casting director on Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and had known Sanjana since Rockstar, where he also served as casting director.
At the 66th Filmfare Awards, Dil Bechara received four nominations, with Farah Khan winning the Best Choreography award for the song "Dil Bechara." Upon its premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on 24 July 2020, the film reportedly registered 95 million views within 24 hours of its release.
Media reports estimated that, if this viewership were calculated using an average theatrical ticket price of ₹200, it would translate to an opening equivalent to approximately ₹2,000 crore in revenue.
Made on a reported budget of around ₹25–30 crore, Dil Bechara is an adaptation of John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars. The screenplay was written by Shashank Khaitan and Suprotim Sengupta, with the story based on John Green's novel.
Satyajit Pande handled the cinematography, Aarif Sheikh edited the film, and A. R. Rahman composed the music. Beyond its emotional story, Dil Bechara stands out for Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi's performances and chemistry, Mukesh Chhabra's direction, and A. R. Rahman's memorable music, which became an important part of the film's identity.
Sushant Singh Rajput is easily the film's biggest strength. As Manny, he brings a lively, playful and charismatic energy to the character, while also handling the more vulnerable and emotional moments with restraint.
Sanjana Sanghi gives a sincere and controlled performance as Kizie Basu. She avoids overplaying the character's illness and gradually makes Kizie's emotional journey convincing. The on screen chemistry between Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi is also one of the film's highlights.
The film works particularly well when Manny and Kizie are together. Their relationship develops through friendship, teasing, humour and emotional vulnerability, giving the romance a natural progression rather than making it feel purely melodramatic.
A. R. Rahman's soundtrack gives the film its emotional identity, with songs such as "Taare Ginn," "Khulke Jeene Ka," "Main Tumhara" and "Maskhari" complementing different stages of Manny and Kizie's relationship.
As a first-time director, Chhabra's biggest strength is his casting and understanding of young characters. Coming from a casting-director background, he gets believable performances from the actors and allows many scenes to feel spontaneous and conversational.
